Convertible Top 'Frame Hold Down Clip'
« on: October 19, 2006 - 07:42:40 PM »
Howdy Folks,

I can't seem to find out anything about my convertible top's frame "hold down clips".   :pullinghair:  I don't even know if this was a standard to the e-body convertibles or not.  The car was restored by the previous owner.  I don't have a picture at the moment but I could provide one if necessary later on as the car is in a shop about an hour's drive away.  Inside the 'well', behind the rear seat, where the top resides when folded down, my '70 Challenger has, on either side, spring loaded retainer clips that hold down (secure) the convertible top.  These are 3/8" wide flat steel risers (about 6" in lenght), bolted to the inside of the 'well'.  Attached to the top of these are solid nylon (or plastic) molded, square shaped 'clips' that snap to the top's frame to hold it tight in the well.  I don't know what they're called, nor have I been able to locate any information on the internet about these.  I need to replace one of them as it is damaged.

Can anyone shed some light on this. :1zhelp:

Thanks.

I'd be interested too.  I have a 70 challenger vert and mine does not have this hold down.  Should it?

What you should have holding your top/well liner in consists of, three tack strips, basically a metal channel with fiberboard pressed into it, the larger center peice goes across the back & the two shorter pieces goes on the sides but curve to join with the rear piece...They are all retained by 1/4"x20TPIx1.5" bolts with special rectangular load spreaders (kinda like rectangular washers) the top is stapled to the tack strips...the tack strips also have snaps attached to them, the well liner has the matching snaps attached to it, those snaps are on a plastic strip that is sewn into the perimeter of the well liner...hope this helps, any questions, PM me...I could take photos of my Coronet parts, they are basically the same, I'm not gonna take my Challenger apart for photos this week

I got the impression he was talking about the tack strips, could be wrong...The only manual top car I've worked on had cylinders simalar to the power top cylinders but no hoses & the rod was spring loaded... :clueless: But I'm a  :newbie: & may not know what I'm talking about...

OK I reread his post & apparently I'm :clueless:...I never noticed the spring clips on that manual top car...

Makes sense, I never really looked that manual top car over that well, I fixed what I was asked to fix & grabbed the next project..

Thanx all.  Sorry, I forgot to mention that this is for a 'manual' top.  fishn4cuda is correct.  The second image in his latest post is the exact piece I am talking about.  :bananasmi   Would be interested in knowing the correct part name for these.  I suspected that they were extremely difficult to locate.  Luckily, my passenger side piece is perfect.  My driver's side piece is missing a big chunk in the nylon molded clip (looks a lot like the #2 picture).  It barely clips to the frame (but it does).  Any other help in clearly identifying this piece or knowing of a solution to repair or replace this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx, 1 Wild R/T.  At least now I know what it's called.  :bananasmi Now the harder part ...... trying to locate one.  Any assistance would, of course, be greatly appreciated.
