HP symbol on front engine pad

    When did the HP stamping on the front engine pad begin? Example:
I have a 440 block with this stamped on the front pad: F440   HP 
10    8     I know that the F stands for the 70' model year right? Then I have a E440 with no HP, does that mean that it is not a high performance block? I assume the E in the second example is for the 1969 model year. Again, what year did they start stamping HP on the front engine pad?    Thank you very much!

I believe the first were 67 "C" 440's, I've seen plenty of "C" HP 440's, there may have been some "B"s but I doubt it as 67 was the first year of the R/T & GTX...

BTW The HP block is the same as a std perf block it just has a couple letters stamped in it...

Does J440 on one of mine make it a 1973?   Is the pic below a balancer for a cast or steel crank?

What about the 11 29 2 on the pad.  Is that the build date?

J is 73 model year, thats a steel crank balancer & the assembly date is november 29th 1972...

Yes Cody, I have 3 six pack motors all cast in August of 1969, all with the stamping that starts 0G. I was wondering if I should list them here where people would see them and perhaps make their numbers connection? I know at least 1 of these motors came from a car that was totaled. So far I only have one in a car, the other 2 are searching for something special! Do you have your motor in a car?

I've posted my numbers on Moparts and have tried to find the original cars, but no takers yet.

Mine are just sitting waiting to be rebuilt.  One will go in the Cuda and the other might be trade bait.

 :clueless:When you look at the upper pad of a 440 HP stamping, is there any order of the stamping.I have seen some that are stamped F HP 440 with date on the bottom.Also I have seen some stamped E 440 with the date on the bottom then HP.Are they both correct?

I can't show a picture of mine because it's painted, but I think it reads F440 HP and has the date on the bottom.My friend has an engine that reads E440 with the date on the bottom with HP2.

The casting on the side of the block is when the block was first cast. On the pad on a 70 F 440 you will sometimes find F 440 hp2. With sometimes a maltese cross signifying .001 undersize U.S crankshaft. Numbers below that mean when the engine was assembled and painted.  Trivia question.  Were all 1970 440 HP2 engines the same except for the cam 440-4 bbl or 440-6bbl ?

From my experience all 440 hps were the same including cam 4 bbl or 6 pak

A true sixpack engine will have four valve notches in the pistons, it may have the three bolt cam, original motors have been found both ways...
