Newbie From Connecticut
« on: October 20, 2006 - 06:44:18 PM »
Hello everyone.

I’m a newbie and would like to say thank you for allowing me to be apart of this outstanding web site. What a great resource for those of us who own and restore America’s finest muscle car, the Mopar E-body. Let me introduce myself. My name is Billy Day and I live in Connecticut. Since I’ve been a small boy, I’ve always wanted to own a Mopar. It all started when I was about nine years old. I was riding by bicycle in our neighborhood one day when all of a sudden I herd this loud rumble noise. I stopped to see what it was and saw this bright orange car with this huge wing in the back. It drove right by me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It looked just like a Hot Wheels. Wow, what a car! Ever since then, I’ve been hooked. That was in the summer of 71. 34 years later, I finely got a chance to own my very first Mopar muscle car. Why did it take me so long? Well, you probably all heard it before. I got married when I was 19. I was a father at 20 and joined the Navy when I was 21. So, supporting my new family and defending our Country, owning and working on a muscle car was out of the question for me. No time or money. Well, I’m ecstatic to say, after 20 years in the Submarine Force and a daughter in collage, I finely did it. I retired from the Navy, got a good job, and bought my first Mopar muscle, a 1970 Dodge Challenger SE.
                                                                                                                     :woohoo:

Let me tell you a little about it. I bought the car from a female police officer that bought the car for her boyfriend. Six months later the boyfriend splits and the car ends up for sale in the local paper. This is when I came into the picture. When I saw the car listed as a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T, 4-speed, 440, I had to see it. I called the lady to make arrangements to see the car but was told it was sold. She told me she sold the car to a dealer in Texas called Texas Toy Box. So, I gave the lady my number and told her if the deal feel through to give me a call. Four weeks later, she did. She called me back and said the guy never came to pick up the car and asked if I was still interested. “Of course!”   :droolingbounce:  I said and drove up to see the car. It turned out to be a 1970 Challenger SE. It was originally a 318 car but was restored 12 years earlier using a drive train from a 1967 B-body. The car has a 440 with an 18 spine 4-speed and a Dana 60. Here's the bad part; depending on how you look at it. The car was restored as a Pro Street but retains all it’s original futures. It still looks stock with the exception of the back half and the big meats. Here’s the good part; I got the car for a reasonable price because of that. If it was a true R/T with that running gear, the car would have sold a lot sooner and I would have never been able to afford it. Now that I have the car, what do I do? Find a donor car to use and restore what I have or fix up the car the way it is and have fun with it. What do you guys think?   :dunno:

Thanks!
  Billy

The only one who can make that choice is you, personally I've always liked the big meats out back & though I would make some changes I couldn't see going through all the work to return your car to stock so it's just another Challenger... :2cents: Back in the early 90's a friend of mine built a prostreet Challenger & kept allot of the factory look by using Rally Wheels custom made by Mike Stallings (owner of Wheel Vintiques before he started the company) they were 15x14" in the rear & 15x6" in the front...the car sat at stock height, had a T/A hood, the exhaust came out through the valance with tips....The car just looked "right"...

Welcome Billy,

To me the car looks fine just the way it is but it is entirely up to you which way you want to go with it.  I would enjoy it for a while and see whats feels right to you.

I think it looks bad ass just the way it is. I would use it like that for a while and see if it's really worth changing back. If you bought it to have some fun then do just that. Only you can make the decision but I would maybe make some changes to make it more mine but I wouldn't bother with the expense and time to put it back to original stock rear end.
Just my opinion.

Welcome to the site and let me say the Challenger looks great just the way iit is. I would drive the car for a while and see how you like it before I would change it back to stock as it is really up to you what you do with the Challenger.

Welcome to the site.  That is a nice looking Challenger and you are the only one to make the choice of the change.

Welcome   I think it looks great.  Only thing I don't like is the blacked out trim and I think different wheels would make it look better.  If you really don't like it as is being a prostreet car, maybe considering trading it.  I'd drive it and enjoy it as is

First time I saw or noticed one with an se rear window and no vinyl top.  Does it have ladders/4 link or relocated springs?  What size are the rear meats?

I might sound like a broken record, broken record,  but its your car, I really like it now, but if youre asking for opinions, those tires are too big for me.  But, your car, do as you like!

If it were me I would unload that sucker to this guy in Baltimore that goes by the screen name of Madmax440. Honestly, I think it looks great just the way that it is. Unless, you want to change it back to stock and have it look like every other Chally. If this car satisfies your personal taste its your buck man. There are some purist around that hate seeing a car changed from original, but I personally think thats whats its all about anyway. The car should reflect your own personality. Welcome to the site, I just joined a little over two months ago and have benefitted greatly from the knowledge and all around

Car is awesome.  I think original cars such as RTs and RT/SE's are plain, boring and actually unoriginal.  Put some of your own touches into it.  It already looks truly original to me.  :2thumbs:

Welcome to the forum! The car looks great just the way it is.  If you like it, that's all that matters.  There is one other member on the board (scf100) who also has an SE (RT) without a vinyl top.  The plug was filled over just like yours.

Glad you found us!
