340 or 440

What would be the advantage of a 340 over a 440?
I may be schizophrenic,
but at least I have each other

weight
:iagree: and maybe fuel mileage.
The price would be close to the same, just depends on you are looking for power wise.

100lbs difference rule of thumb, costs about 10hp, so, bugger all really.
Handling of course is improved, I guess it depends on the application.

Well, okay, but what are the resulting cubic inches of stroking that 340?

A stroke 340 is about 416 CI.  I think the answer to your question depends on your hp requirements.  I just finished a 408 (stroked 360).  It's got a ton of torque.  I would say that the small blocks are great for up to about 450hp. Blocks are more readily available (360).  After that the cylinder wall thickness and head bolting/head gaskets are the weak links.  Perhaps an R3 block would be the way to go but you would have to double the budget.

440 with aluminum heads and lightweight components wouldn't be much heavier than a 340 and the performance potential is much higher....    :cooldancing:

How about dropping another 50lb's or so off the 440's weight by using a 400 block instead and stroking it to a 451, 470 or 500ci  :ylsuper:

i HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A B MOTOR BEING 50LBS LIGHTER THAN AN RB AND IF IT IS IT MIGHT BE BECAUSE OF LESS STROKE AND THE CRANK BEING LIGHTER SO IF U PUT A 440 CRANK IN A 400 YOU HAVE WHAT ?? A B THAT WEIGHTS THE SAME AS AN RB MINUES A LITTLE BIT OF WEIGHT FROM A HEIGHER DECK.

tHE RULE IS 100LBS 1/10 SECOND
DOUBLE HE WEIGHT QUADDRUPEL THE HP
