by definition a "true" Muscle car is the largest motor offered by the Mfr. stuffed
into a small or mid-sized chassis.

Still no answer..what are you wanting it to do for you? Cruising/cruise nights? Drag racing? Road racing? Cannon Ball Run type highway driving? A stock 340 is about 50lbs lighter than a stock B (383/400), and about 90lbs lighter than a stock 440. It also carries that weight lower in the chassis. 340 stroked can be a 380ish(3.58 stroke) or a 416ish(4" stroke). A 4" stroke 416 will out torque a 440, both in peak torque number and  rpm that peak torque occurs at when both are built similar. (the longer stroke will beat it every time :cooldancing:) To compare apples to apples, the 440 would have to be built to a 528 (4.5" stroke). Then the 528 will win the contest.

When you stroke a small block, it becomes a bb cubic inch. So yer just a bb wanna be. Cause if a bb guy wanted a weight reduction, he could go with an Indy max or kb block, be under 500 lbs and handle fine. Plus, when you talk about smoking bb's, how many do you see running in the 4, 5, and 6's ?  BB cubes when done right out runs ALL sm blocks.  Now when you throw turbos and blowers in the mix, it gets a bit tricky

4s 5s and 6s? Wanna bees? :smilielol:. It's easier to build a big block. But there are much better head and block choices for small blocks, much better packaging under hood, and much faster revving. Not to mention a race 59° block starts around $1800 IIRC...With machining, you can have $3500-4K into it. The base big block as shipped from MP or Indy is $2500, and the machining still needs to be all done or corrected. That's assuming your MP block ever comes in, and when it does, it  may not pass the sonic check to be built to where MP said it could go to. Aside from the KB $5000 versions, big block bare blocks are a nightmare, from Indy or MP. Just stating a fact. I know more than a few small blocks under 425" that run way in the 9s N/A. I think that equates to faster than 6s. Plus, they fit easier, handle better, and can be easier to work on. I like 'em all, but saying they are all wannabees is a sign of lack of vision, or knowledge, or experience with both. If you never have, everyone should all drive a 4" arm A body...I've driven 4.15 in arms in B blocks, and they are fun, but not like tha 4" small blocks. I'll have a 4.25" RB (505") customer engine done in a couple months, but my truck and street car will both have 416/418s in them. In both instances, using a small block block means I'm saving over $4000 on mounts, suspension, braking(power booster), headers, transmissions and the associted support hardware. Guess I'm a cheap wannabee..lol. :roflsmiley:

If you got a stick then 340 all the way, but if you got an auto then the 440. The 340/4 spd combo is just too much fun!

I built my 416 stroker to keep the car a small block car as it is an original 340 4 speed 'Cuda.  In addition, it is lighter than a big block, easier to work and drives like a big block car that likes to rev.  Now if I could only keep head gaskets in it!  If money was no object I would go with the R3 block with the W2 heads with the extra bolts.

I wasn't looking for any special application just an idea of the plusses and minuses which this thread has generated.  Great discussion.

For me I really like the design of the big block better , I have no idea why the small block was not designed more like the big block seeing as it was created After the big block  , but I love not having water in the intake & the air gap design with the valley pan , the dist in front & angled out of the way & the external oil pump with the filter easily accessible in front , & the deep skirt block

I couldn't agree more!!   :ylsuper:  And if that 440 dies, it makes a much better boat anchor than the 340 would.  :smilielol:   :stirpot:

big blocks use lots of fuel. if you intend to drive it often a hp small block is worth a good hard look.. the performance
difference is not that great besides how often do you get to let a bb to all hang out without getting into trouble with the law or creating a traffic hazard.  however cruise-in bragging rights of elephant motors are cool but then again we are in the age of nitrous bottles which were not seen back in the 60's & early 70's
