Getin' her ready for bed.......(REVISED)
« on: October 28, 2006 - 09:06:34 AM »
I don't really know where to start this post so I'm just gonna roll with it....  :2cents: Tailor it to fit your needs.

Last year there were alot of car storage posts. Scince it's supposed to be mid 50'S here tomorrow it'll probly be the last ride of these season. So I thought maybe some of the newbie's might like some storage tips.  :grinyes:

Anyway clean your car up best you can in the weather you got, you dont want to store anymore contaminants than you have too.

Next thing I like to do is get a couple of large bags of charcoal (no I'm not havin' a BBQ) This is to lay out under the car. Charcoal seems to draw moisture to it (and away from the car). Just get a couple bags of the cheap stuff, DO NOT get the Match light type... the fumes will knock you out and way too risky if you get my drift.  :nono:
I can usually get 2 or 3 seasons out of it. (Shows how cheap I really am). You'll know when it's reached it saturation point cause it turns ashen grey and crumbles in you hand. This year I'm also gonna get some el-cheapo glad ware and put a little in the trunk and interior.

I know alot of you guys like using dryer sheets to keep the mice away and out of your interior ect. As long as I've
been using charcoal I have not had a mouse problem, maybe just me?

Obviously a full tank of gas is in order, dont be stingy with the STA-BIL!  :jumping:

I've always overinflated the tires.. about 42-45 lbs. Seems to ward of flat spot issues.

Take the battery out... duh.

Fresh oil and a very liberal splash down the intake manifold. I give it a spin or 2 to coat the cyl walls. Plus You don't wanna be crankin' over a dry engine come spring.

Oh yeah I almost forgot before I throw on the car cover... Top up on the converts! Trust me on this one...

I hope someone finds this helpful, my apologies if I forgot anything. Now enough of this I gotta get to the store..

How could I forget...
A light spray of WD-40 will keep the corosion off your wheels till spring, and clean-ups really easy!

Just got back from a cruise. Was out for all afternoon. Filled the old tank up Wawa premium $2.19 gallon. So I'll have too go out again tomorrow for a ride. If the sun's out and roads are dry , why not... The Cuda runs better when it cold out..

Id cutoff the fuel supply and run the motor until it dies so you dont get any varnish or anything in the carb(s).

Thanks for the advice! Most are things I have been doing but you had a few ideas I hadn't heard of before.  I am definately going to pump up my tires to a higher psi and see if that helps prevent the flat spotting I encounter when I first drive my car in the new season!
With the charcoal how do you put it with your car? Put full unopened bags under the car?  Pour charcoal in a tray or pans and slide them under the car?
I have a few additional things that I do when I park my car for the winter.  I always put the sunvisors down, for some reason mice like to climb up on sunvisors and chew holes in the headliner.  Putting the visors down thwarts the little vandals!
I fill up some gas cans with 100LL aviation gas I get from the self serve at the airport and and use that to top off my tank when I store the car.  Avgas is much more stable than pump gas, it will last over 6 months before it experiences any deteriation.  Pump gas will start to go bad in less than 2 months. Maybe it is just my imagination but my car seems to run much smoother when I first take it out in spring with the mix of avgas and pump gas in it.  Since my tank is usually over half full of pump gas when I top it off I put Stabil in it too.
Don't try this with a post '74 car with catylitic convertors, "LL" stands for low lead which will ruin cats in a hurry.
A buddy of mine has a storage bag that seals, that he parks his Challenger in for storage.  I haven't seen it but he tells me you drive the car into it, add some sort of desicant bag to it, and zip it shut, and the bag is air and varmit tight. I think he said he got it from California car covers and he swears by it.
My Challenger shares the garage with one of my daily drivers.  If it is snowy or slushy out I don't put the driver back in the garage if it has those lumps of frozen slush in the wheel wells because I don't want that stuff all over my garage floor when it thaws, evaporating salt and moisture into the air by my Challenger.  Seems like a real bad thing!  So when the driver gets messy it has to stay outdoors for awhile until it thaws!
I am not a big fan of winter, but my 4 wheel drive Ram makes it more bearable.......

JH27N0B- I usually get 2 or 3 20 lbs bags depending on what I can salvage from the year before. Defienetly take it out of the bags, I lay it right ontop the concrete. - ever see concrete sweat?- I just spead it over the floor and park ontop of it. I have a buddy that also puts a few nuggets ontop of his tires! The visors idea is a good one, but as stated I never had a mouse problem since I used charcoal, but why risk it. I hope this helps.
