How can you identify a 6-pack engine
« on: November 04, 2006 - 06:22:56 AM »
I know how to identify an HP engine, but how do you telll the difference between an HP engine and a 6-pack engine? Is there a specific part number?

Is the engine assembled or disassembled?  I believe the 6 pack engines had different rod #'s and a 3 bolt cam.

Some of the internal parts were different, but the blocks were the same.

So any HP engine block can become a 6-pack block if you have the correct internals? If so, how are people justifying asking 10k for 6-pack blocks?

On the front top pad, by the water pump, there will be a stamping of "HP2" for the six pack engine.

HP2 does not mean it's a six pack motor. Some say it means it was built on the second shift.
"The number 2, which you may find after the HP, (or in the case of  non HP blocks, you may find just a "2" by itself, usually in the lower right hand corner of the ID pad) refers to the shift during which the engine was assembled. In running a factory, one 24 hour day can be divided into three 8 hour shifts. The first shift was considered a "1" however to save time, Chrysler did not stamp a "1", they just left it blank. So an HP2 engine, only means that the engine happened to be assembled on the second shift. There is no advantage to an HP2 block over an HP."

So back to my question. How do you know if you are getting a real 6-pack block for $10k, or a regular HP block that someone put 6-pack internals into, which can be done for a whole lot less?

The only true way to find out if a block is a six pack block is track down the car that the VIN number on the block belongs to. If it's a six pack car, it's a six pack block.
