Run on?
« on: November 04, 2006 - 10:54:19 PM »
Have  a 340 with 600 Edelbrock carb on a performer  manifold.......just  got  it started  today,  after  13 yrs  of  working  on this car....great  feeling  to here it run finally. Running  right now  thru open  headers, have  timing  set at  about  5 degrees  advance  and  runs  awesome....but  when  I  shut it down  with the key  it's  running  on. What causes this? timing? to much  fuel? or  is it because  of the open pipes  and  no back pressure  til  I  get the exhaust  on? ....thx...

3 thinks cause run on , timing , idle speed & fuel , start adjusting
Congrats on getting it running , disconnect the vacuum advance , leave it disconnected & advance the timing to 12-16*

I agree with the above. It sounds like the timing is NOT too far advanced though, if it is only at 5*. What RPM's do you have at idle(700-800 would be a good starting point)? If you are lacking octane, then what octane rating does the gas have that you are using now, and what is the compresion ratio of your engine?

I'll add "idle speed too high/throttle open too far" to the other items.
