Gas tank finish
« on: November 05, 2006 - 02:41:24 PM »
Just installed a new re-pop gas tank from Year one.
Originally, were these left unfinished, painted or ?? :dunno:

I'm not 100% sure but I would say unfinished.  That said, a low gloss clearcoat would be nice to keep it looking good.

The problem is a low gloss clearcoat will peel unless the basemetal is scuffed, if you scuf the tank & clear it...It will look like crap....If the car was undercoated the tank typically was about 75% undercoated..

On My Challenger I wax the bare steel twice a year, it's been on the road over ten years & still looks fine...

galvanizing just slows rust down. Heck I've seen Stainless steel rusting in Ca.

So unpainted then?

I've never seen a Mopar tank that was galvanized, they were originally tin coated, the repos aren't & I haven't seen a NOS E body tank in close to fifteen years...
