New SoCal Newbie......
« on: November 07, 2006 - 05:10:06 PM »
Hi everyone - been lurking for a couple of weeks & finally got the time to post a pic of my car (I'm picking it up this Thursday) and say Howdy!  Having been out of the hobby for the past 12 years or so, I have found this site to be one of the best I've come across & the info presented here is priceless!

In 1978 I bought a Numbers Matching 1970 'Cuda 440-6/727 (Rallye Red), with a Shaker, original interior, original vinyl top, light pkg, Super Trak Pac and 1 re-paint.  Broke my heart, but sold it 12 years ago to buy a house & not a day has gone by that I haven't thought about that car.....

But the Mopar bug just wouldn't let go, so I've been looking for the last 2+ years for another car to replace the 'Cuda.   I got lucky & found a 1970 Challenger R/T, Numbers Matching 440 Magnum / 727 combo.  It's an original California car, original sheet-metal, 1-repaint and the best part is, that is was local to me (about 30 miles away).  The lady I'm buying it from has full documentation, including service records, build-sheet, etc. so I'm quite pleased to have come across this car.

It's a little rough, will need a complete re-do, but Thankfully, I've got an inside to a Mopar restoration shop in NorCal.  My G/F's brother-in-law does paint work for them & I've already called & described the car to him.  His only comment was that it would be an easy resto.  No panels to replace, no weld work, just a little body work, dissassemble, clean, paint & put back together.  The pic I've attached shows it in it's present condition, I'll be posted to the Resto section to let you know how it comes along....

Welcome, I was lucky enough also to find a very nice car to begin with (see avatar),  but not a 70', and not an R/T!

Very cool, you'll like it here

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!  Plans for the Challenger will be determined by what I find once I put it onto the lift at the shop & take a good long look at everything.  I do plan on pulling out the driveline & going through everything - I still have the cam specs on the 'Cuda I used to own and am considering having a custom grind to match it.  Idled nice & made plenty of HP up to when the valves would start to float.....fuel is not a problem, I have access to 100 Leaded AV gas.  The trans will just get a freshening-up & valve-body mods.

Re: the '70 'Cuda I had; unfortunately all of my pics are on 35mm prints, but if you happen to have any of the last 8 years worth of Edelbrock equipment catalogs laying around, look through the Mopar section - if there's a 1970 Cuda somewhere on the pages, that's mine.  They 'borrowed' it for a cover shoot a long time ago and it still keeps popping up every year since.

Welcome to the site Robert. Looks like a great find and close to home is a big plus. I got rid of my 70 440-6 4 speed Cuda before the price ever went through the roof not knowing what would happen with these cars later on. Keep us posted on your progress and post some more pictures when you have a chance so we can check out the whole car.
