input shaft on tranny too long?
« on: November 08, 2006 - 11:05:38 PM »
Anybody ever heard of the input shaft on a A-833 being too long to bolt up to a new 360 crate motor?  I'm hitting the crankshaft with 3/8" more to go to flush up the tranny with the bell housing.  Help!!

Sounds like the crank wasn't drilled deep enough.. You have two choices, have the crank drilled deeper, or cut the input shaft off a little shorter...

Yeah, my thought was to cut the input shaft, but I'd never heard of that being done.  Any tips?

I would be more inclined to drill the hole in the crank

Acually cutting the input down has been done quite a bit, GM & Ford inputs only have about 1.25" bearing surface or their inputs, mopar has about  2" & a larger diameter for more surface area... :2cents:

But on the flip side, if you have access to a mag drill or can rent one the crank could be drilled with the crank in the engine & the engine in the car, you would likely need the replace the pilot bushing as it would act as a guide for the drill & be damaged, but it is doable..
