I still don't see what is wrong with getting him a car that he can restore. He has stated that he would love this or that car that's in a basket right here on the forum. I know everyone would like to see him get a completed car but then again, it's not the same driving one you built and one someone gave to you. Lets not take away his chance to restore his own car.  :2cents:

We could still help him out with engine, trans etc..

With what jeryst has said I beleive everyone has already realized the truth of all that. Truely this project has been basically setting at a standstill for nearly a year............? Due to all the above (time/money/logistics/ etc.) Glen may have the only avaliable solution under the circumstances. Obtain the best project car we have funds for and along with that a box truck full of parts such as engine, tranny etc. It's not what we had envisioned, but I truely beleive Don would be most appreciative and have a smile like a lil boy on Christmas eve. Don is a great guy with a blue collar/down to earth character and personality.   :feedback:   :2thumbs:

I think that giving him a project car and parts is an acceptable solution. He would get to experience the joys and frustrations of restoring his own car, with his own hands, in his own way, just like the rest of us. However, even this solution has things we must consider.

First, the car has to be of sufficient quality/condition that any of us would want it (Exclude MoparClown from that). I know that goes without saying, but I just want to drive it home (No pun intended).

Second, if he has not had the resources to buy a project car, he probably won't have the resources to restore one, although he can just store it until he does, if that is an option for him. Does he have a place to store it/work on it? Does he live on base, or have his own house? Does he move a lot, or stay in one place? My brother-in-law is in the military, and he  moves every two years, and it's always from one end of the country to the other. The cost of frequently moving a project car may be prohibitive for him, and he may wind up having to get rid of it. To me that would be very painful, because sometimes losing a dream is worse than not ever achieving it. The old saying "It's better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all", is not always true.

Giving him a restored vehicle, and giving him a project and parts are the two extremes, but maybe we can land somewhere in the middle. Although we may not be able to give him a restored vehicle, we may be able to take some of the steps, like fixing the frame, floors, trunk, etc. Maybe we could have the vehicle and/or body parts soda-blasted and prepared. Perhaps, we would be more successful by getting donations of services from individual service providers, in exchange for recognition and advertising rights. With people donating parts, time, skills, and resources, maybe our best hope is to fix some of the major problems and get it as close as we can. I'm sure he would appreciate anything we can do. Even if we could just concentrate on getting it safe and driveable, it would be a huge success. I'm sure it would mean a lot to him to be able to take it for a lap around Carlisle, no matter how it looks. If we can't accomplish any of that, at least we can fall back on giving him the project and parts, as is.

Don't forget to allocate some of the funds to transport the car and parts to Carlisle, then from Carlisle, to wherever he lives, or wants it taken. Maybe someone can donate transportation, and part of the funds could go for fuel.

I also agree with jeryst and while I don't want to sound like the wheels are falling off the wagon, it's reality.  I won't go into all the details why, especially because every before me seems to have covered my thoughts and feelings.  I think he would be floored if we could present a vehicle to him with a box truck full of parts (motor, trani, etc.).

Have we ever thought about Overhauling?  I know it's been mentioned, BUT, if we did it right, then it could work.  Let's say we gave him the car at Carlise, then he would truely be the ower, not cc.com.  Then, if Overhauling were contacted, they would be doing it for a person, not an organization.  Maybe we can contact Overhauling and try to coordinate that when the CudaGuy sees it at Carlise, that it gets "lost" in the transporation home, only to go to Overhauling and be done right?

I don't know, I'm just thowing stuff out here, but I think if we got him a car with a lot of parts, he would be more than grateful and honored.

I understand everyone's point of view here.  A few considerations though.  I know his house has a carport...not a garage.  Storage for a lot of parts might be a problem.  Also, I understand he will be redeployed late next year to Afghanistan, so time to work on it will be limited and having a project car with a lot of parts might be a burden to his family.

As for Overhaulin, we have submitted an application and as far as I know have not heard back.  But after hearing about Goody's dealings with Overhaulin, it sounds like we'd be strapping CudaGuy to a $10k tax bill if we went that route.

Just food for thought.

Confirm that we have heard nothing from Overhaulin'. The way the process is organized, we submit an application which goes through the show producers and they choose likely canididates. They've set it up so that the application is only submissible by snail mail, which means that there's not an e-mail or phone number to call to check on progress. With a little research we could probably find one, but my prior experiences dealing with Hollywood tell me that we're likely to just get a secretary who can't or won't answer any questions. Bottom line, while Overhaulin' would be great, we can't even begin to count on it.

For what it's worth, I think the best possible option is to get him a car with a reasonably solid body and a drivetrain that will move it safely; I think someone upstream or on another thread offered a motor and trans, so we would need to find a solid body. I don't know CudaGuy, but I agree with every else's comments that I bet he'd be ecstatic with any Cuda, and as long as we're not making it a strain on his family when he redeploys I think we can feel good about whatever we can get him if it meets the above criteria.

Chip Foose doesn't pick the cars for the show. The producers do. I know. We sent in an application when Shelby's godfather was in the hospital (before he passed away) . I have a friend who's Mom works for the Discovery Channel ( which owns TLC) and she couldn't do anything for us to get Chad's car on the show.  :dunno:

Ok, if we knows he's getting redeplyed (or 90% possible), would it be a good idea to extend the date that we give him his cuda :clueless:?  I know everyone wanted to do it at Carlisle but if we can only afford 4k at the time and we've got another 2k of solid parts and labor to put into it, we may never reach that goal of 2007.

Hmmm....trying to utilize our resources as best possible here.....  :pullinghair:

I hear what your saying RDF, but on the other hand Don has been to Iraq twice and is being deployed later next summer/fall to Afghastan (sp?). This has to be a big emotional load on him and his family, my god how much is one solider supposed to go through? Can you imagine hopefully what an emotional uplift this might bring to him before he leaves again. Having something tangible that says "Your are appreciated solider!" This man is a warrior, we are fortunate to not have to experience what he (and others) have endured for us and this country. If there is anyway possible I'd say present it a Carlisle 2007 when he will be there with us.  :2cents:

Ok, maybe present it (in the state that we'll have it in by then) and then tell him we'll work on it while he's deployed again...giving us more time to finish?  I don't know, just tossing ideas around really......I really want to make this work for this guy.

This sounds like it might be a good possibility.

The biggest part of a resto is usually the body work and unless you have a garage, tools and time or lots of cash to pay a shop it`s won`t get done.I think if we can at least get a cuda and get the major body work and paint done and get a drivetrain and susupension in it making it a running driving vehicle it would be great and not worry about having it completely done.I think we could accomplish that and I would love to help with the work but I`m too far away.  :walkaway: As for which one it`s kind of a wait and see where the prices go and even the nice looking ones usaully need a fair amount of metal work once you get them stripped.

Well, if he's going to redeploy to Afghanistan sometime next year and wouldn't have time to work on the car anyway, couldn't we just wait longer? I know it's been nearly a year and funds haven't come in as expected, but if we waited another 6+ months, we might be able to get him something better.

I know we'd all like to have a truck pull up to his house tomorrow with a 'Cuda on a flatbed, but if it doesn't run and if he doesn't have the time or money to get it running soon, we might as well wait longer.

If worse came to worse and he bought a car of his own in the meantime, we could use the money on parts he wants to help fund the restoration he would have to do after he bought his own project car.

Is there any real downside to waiting longer other than us being restless?
