Best all-around gears ???
« on: November 12, 2006 - 11:31:09 AM »
I currently have Chrysler 8.75, Casting 489 1.875" Diameter pinion Gears from Richmond. These are hell when I am driving on the highway. It feels like it needs another gear once I get up around 55 mph, I go through the lower gears in no time. What would be a good all-around gear to use and would this be the only thing needing changed ???

What ratio do you have? i would say 3.23/3.55 is a decent all around gear. New ring/pinion/speedo gear is what you would need. Ultimate setup would be an overdrive (but $$$)

you May need a brg & seal kit to install different gears into your carrier , everyone will have a different opinion of what is the best gear depending what you want the car for , personally I like taller gears , 2.7 or 2.9 for highway , 3.23 is good midrange gear , 3.55 are good for both highway & city depending on tire size , anything over 3.55 will limit highway use for sure

I have a 904, 3.23 gears, and 28 inch rear tires and the engine is turning 3000 rpm at 80 mph.  Like Chryco said "everyone will have a different opinion", but I like my setup very much.   Just my  :2cents:

What RPM's are you doing on the hiway? I have the 8 3/4 rear, 489 casting, and 3:23 gears. At 60 MPH, I do about 2600 RPM. Not too bad. A shift kit in my tranny allows me to delay my shifting too.  :burnout:

I forgot to mention that my tranny also like to shift fast.  You may need to adjust the shift linkage for my setup.

For the cars I have driven a lot of miles on, I pefer a 3.23 gear with the automatic and a 3.55 with the four speed.

I have 3.91`s in my `72 but at 65-75 it`s spinning 3500-3800rpm which is buzzing but my 340 dosen`t seem to mind for short highway jaunts under 45 minutes.I plan on using 3.23`s for my road runner for a nice criuser for longer distances.

Hey Madmax440, if you're running a 440 and have the torque, I'd stick with 3:23's, if you are running small block, go for the 3:55's. Just my opinion but the higher torque engines do quite well with a bit taller gears. I was planning on 3:55's in my 70 B body that's running a big block but since I've got it running and tried it out with a sure grip 3:23 in it I am sticking with the 3:23's for now. I'd rather do that then try to make the tires stick with lower gears. Just my thoughts on this. Let us know what you end up doing and how it works.

All round would be street, so 3.23 definitely.
No such thing as a 1/4 mile track all round gear, you only need it for one thing.

I run 410's in the 440 auto and 355 in the 440 stick. The 410 challenger I just stay off the interstate and use the car for fun, Cruising is 3200. Don't know what speed it is. Havent done the speedo yet. My car hooks good with a 3k stall and the 410's.

Depends on if your hardcore...Back in the eighties I drove a 440-6 Challenger R/T with a 4.10 Dana from central California (Modesto) to San Diego, round trip about 1,000+ miles aveage speed 60mph 28" tire engine spinning 31-3200 rpms...That said I wouldn't do it again.. :smilielol: If you are doing allot of around town stop light to stop light with a little highway action I'd run 3.55's if your on the freeway allot 3.23's are a decent gear or maybe 2.94's...
