I Have 3.55's in my 73 rally with a 340 auto I also have a shift kit in the tranny! I am running stock tires.  I feel the 3.55's are great for both street and freeway.  They are great for light to light and in the 80's I use to drive 140 mph on the freeway with no problem! (and I always seemed to win the races on the street!!) It is also an 8 3/4 rear end and I have a 727 tranny!! just my  :2cents:

140 MPH with 3.55 gear & a 27" tire requires 6500+ rpm....You wouldn't drive 140 for long... :2cents:

Thanks for all of the input Guys. I will probably be going with the 3.23 gear, I don't drive 55 mph that much but do so enough. I would prefer to go with the 3.55 so that I don't lose my edge, but am afraid that I will practically be in the same position that I am now if I don't.

What RPM's are you doing on the hiway? I have the 8 3/4 rear, 489 casting, and 3:23 gears. At 60 MPH, I do about 2600 RPM. Not too bad. A shift kit in my tranny allows me to delay my shifting too.  :burnout:

  Mike

I am running a Dana with 4:10's in it.  I am also turning 2600 @ 60 mph, but I am running 31.5" tall tires.  That makes the 4:10 a little more comfortable on the highway.................    :cooldancing:

BTW---- I think 3:55's are great all round gears for the performance enthusiast...............

90 mph with 3.55 gear & 27" tire is 4200 rpm's at that speed 30 miles takes around 20 minutes...
120 mph with 3.55 gear & 27" tire is 5600 rpm's at that speed 30 miles takes 15 minutes, assuming the engine stays together...

BTW 150 mph is 7,000 rpm...

I have an Excel spread sheet that is intended to find speedo gear size but could be used to determine what gear ratio you would want, say at a given speed/rpm with different tire sizes, anyone want I will email to you.

Can you figure out exactly which speedo gear is needed for a 3.55 gear with 28" tall tires ?
