Strange vinyl roof on a 70 Garn Coupe with sun roof

Did the Gran Coupe with sun roof come like this from the factory? Could you get the sun roof without the vinyl roof?

Very likely a custom job. Chrysler did not offer a factory sunroof in the Barracuda line until the 1972 model year.

Any other photos of it?  :dunno:

No, I only found these pictures on a swedish website. You could get sun rood on b-body in 69. But not on the e-body before 72?

Pixie's duster will have a half vinyl top like that...but it's supposed to be that way.  That looks interesting though...it could grow on ya given some time.

You have to trace the origin of that. While Alaskan's info is correct, the only 100% sure thing with Ma is "never say never". In mocking up cars for the 1972 run, I'm sure a few existing models were used as scapegoats. Now the chance of one of those getting out and migrating across the pond is remote - again I'd never say impossible. Drop the headliner and check for crude welding, putting it moreseo in the home done conversion category, but again not negating it.

*EDIT* - the rear cutoff trim does look like a homemade (non production) piece, but if it were an early mockup attempt, then the pieces would be made ad hoc to get a feel for fitment.

Wow, that's rather unique.  It definitely looks like some sort of custom work, but who knows...There have been many strange things that made it outside the factory that weren't meant to be. (like "Body in White" cars.)
1973 Dodge Challenger......................The ongoing project. (00/----\00)
1991 Dodge Stealth R/T Twin-Turbo....The sunny day cruiser (RTBoost)
1990 Toyota Celica GT Liftback...........The new daily & winter driver.
All-American Muscle: 'Cudas and Challengers...Still the Elite and always will be.

Just to add, the sunroof conversions can be done without any welding. I put a B-Body sunroof in my '71 Challenger without a welder.

I have not measured one, but I have heard that the  Barracudas have a shorter roof front to back, so the B-Body and Challenger sunroof pans will not fit them.

Any one care to measure a '70 Barracuda from windhield to rear window? I would like to know for sure.

I have seen that "halo" roof on one other Barracuda last summer near Sacramento.  It was a light blue car owned by literally a little old lady who had it at a car show.   I had taken several pics of it but have since deleted them.

Factory sunroof cars were built as non-vinyl top hardtops, then sent out to be converted by ASC. All sunroof cars recieved a vinyl top installed by ASC after the sunroof was installed. They did not use the factory chrome trim around the bottom of the vinyl top, but rather a glued on type trim. They are a full standard vinyl top, I've never seen such a 1/2 vinyl top on an E-body car before.

I'm in the midst of restoring a 70 R/T sunroof car now, it's at my friends place being blocked and final body prep before paint. Factory white car with blue interior. Most of the factory sunroof Challengers you'll see are loaded up cars. This one i have has A/C, power windows, 6 way seat, AM-FM, rimblo, console auto, rallye inst package, power brakes and steering, cruise control. 383 /727 package, even has a rear sway bar. Two fender tag car.

  :wow:  That's pretty cool!

Is that a black car?  Burnt orange interior?  Blue stripe?

It'll look real cool when it's done!
