I will try and post some pics.......The starter cavity is so close that it won't even slide forward enough to clear the bendix gear from the  bell housing.......The pics are not very good but here they are anyway.

The tight clearance is probably the reason it does not work. I had a starter burn up due to header heat. One extra reason to get a ministarter  Hope it works out for you. you definitely need to get the headers off to extract that starter  :eek4:

There is only one painful solution. You have to remove the bolts from both ends of your header. I've been there, done that.  :pullinghair: Once the bolts are removed, you can pull the header forward, and tilt the header downward on the collector side, and the starter will clunk out onto the ground. Be ready for the anti-freeze to gush out when you remove the header bolts.  :22yikes: You will have to put some thread sealant on them when you put them back in. Like I said, I know your pain, but it can be done... eventually.  :grinyes:

How about another chapter..........I removed all the nuts from the header bolts..All the bolts stayed in the block.  The header will not pull away from the block enough to clear the bolts because the steering box is in the way........ There are 6 or 8 bolts (I'm not looking right now) and I thought about double nutting the bolts to remove them but there is only room for one nut and washer with the header in place.           More opportunities!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

When I had some stubborn header studs that would not unbolt I just took some visegrips to them. There should be a change from standard thread to fine thread and a "hump" or bare spot between the two threads that you can get a good bite with the pliers. Might ruin the studs but sounds like you dont want them there anyway. Good luck!

You need to get those studs out of there with a vice-grips like a user said, Have the car jacked up in the front with tall jack stands, then tilt the whole header downward at the collector. The starter will slide out once turned the right direction.    If you HAVE TO,  put on the nut still flush with the troubled studs, then hit it with a mig welder and weld the nut to the stud, to get it out.

if the studs are not stripped I would leave them in place , they seal the antifreeze better then the header bolts will

Chryco is right on about that. Use the studs if headers can be slid over them to hold the gasket and header aligned while starting the bolts.

I remembered that AutoZone has a loan-a-tool of a nice set of stud extractors that work very well. You slip it over the sticking out stud, then put a ratchet on the end.  They work very well on broken off studs too.

Ok folks....another chapter...........I removed the engine mount bolts.  Put a piece of wood on the oil pan rail and jacked..........The engine came up enough for me to realize this might just work.  Since I already had the starter loose and the header loose it wasn't long before I was high enough to remove the header and the starter fell out too.  Our Auto-Zone had 2 in stock.   Swapped out the core charge and brought it home....Will probably put it on Sunday. While I got the header off, I may as well clean it up and heat paint too..  Some pics attached..........Thanks to all for the help.    AND  I took a pic on the engine number......Anyone know when this engine may have been made? I don't know how to relate these numbers.   Thanks again,  David :working:

I see where I said AutoZone......I meant to say Advance Auto.......... :screwy:
