    Got a question...Can someone post a pic of the timing tab on the 440 that isn't painted over??  I cannot see the timing marks and it is in a tight spot to try to sand off.  I know I am supposed to be at about 8 degrees btdc. thanks, David

    Sorry, I looked at all of my engines here and they are all painted or small blocks or modified. Just start at the hole for zero degrees.  The first long line, about 1/2 and inch counter clockwise is 5 degrees BTDC. Second long line, 1/2 and inch below that is 10 degrees BTDC. So about 3/4 of an inch before the hole is about the 8 degrees that you're looking for.

    If you still have the timing tab in place, It extends to about 10 degrees. I'm on the fuzzy edge a little over with my bigger cam. I'm at 12-13 BTDC.

    Question.... I currently have an Edlebrock 750 on the 440.  Can I get by with a 600cfm.????  I believe the 750 is dumping too much gas in and I do want some mpg.   There is also a Torker intake involved with this installation.   :feedback:

    If you have a 750 on there now, I would say that is as small as you should go with it. Is your engine stock(bigger cam)? I have an 800 on mine. If you have a Torker II intake, then that is a single plane manifold built for 2,500 RPM's and beyond. It's tough to get any kind of gas mileage with a 440, unless you have a modern tranny with an overdrive or something. Your rear gear ratio comes into play too. I get a tad more than 12 MPG hiway, but I have a big cam, Holley double-pumper carb, and headers for some performance.

    The math formula is:

    CARB CFM = 

    So if you had a stock, low performance production motor of 350 cubic inches and you wanted to spin it to 5000 rpms max and it had a VE% of 80%, the formula would determine a required carb CFM of 405 CFM. If you had a warmed over street performance motor of the same size, but it was capable of 7000 max rpms and it had better heads, camshaft, headers and a performance intake that raised the VE% to 95%, the formula would give you a minimum required carb CFM size of 673 CFM.


    [440*5000/3456]*80%=509
    [440*7000/3456]*95%=713
    SO a 600 would be a reasonable compromise  :dunno:

    Ok. When I bought the car I was told that the engine had been worked on.  Different from stock cam, headers,

    torker intake. MT valve covers (I'm sure that added 20 more horses),  Anyway  I asked about a carb kit and they don't sell these.  A new 750 is about $260. and a new 600 is $248.  Not much diff.  I guess that the old carb may have me wondering if the 750 is too much or it may be malfunctioning enough to cause me to believe it is too big.

    Can you expand on this? Why do you think the 750 is dumping too much gas? I wouldn't think so if it is setup right. Do your spark plugs look good(not black)? What kind of MPG are you getting, and what rear gears do you have?

     What carb do you have?? I can't believe that you can't get a kit. You said you have a Carter, do you have a model number?

    To answer a couple of questions.  It is an Edlebrock 750 that had varnish consistancy  (sp)  gas in it when I took it apart. I cleaned it as best I could.  I actually haven't had it road worthy only to drive it in the neighborhood about 1/2 mile. When idling it seems smooth but will not take acceleration smoothly. (This may still be a timing issue)   And I really stunk up the house last weekend. Rich smell of gas.  Plug and wires  are new.  The old ones were black however it has set for 1 1/2 years without being started either.  When I do start it (cold engine) I choke it a little and then have to open the choke but hold the throttle open to keep it running until it warms a bit.
