Just my  :2cents: but the 340 has an image that let's say the 327 was to Chevy.

Yah, you can go bigger cubes with a 360 or a Chevy 350, but the 340 and 327 had a heritage to it that is well known.  (Not that I know anything about 327s.)

Finding a 340 will be tougher and more $$$.

I guess it depends what you put it in also, as far as "correctness" too, depending on year, what kind of car, if that's your thing.

I kinda liked that 67 Chevy 327/350 HP motor. Factory 11:1 comp. 365 horses, but back to the 360 ?... Looks like the big guys ( Mopar ) decided 360 was the way to go. If I was going to go for power, no question...the 360. Do some things like Chryco said. If you want a 340 in the car to keep it with the correct era engine then go 340.

A 340 and a 327 are not even in the same zip code. I would never compare a chebbi to a Mopar engine, either. That's just blasphemy.  :screwy:

The 340 motors and yes even the 327 have a shorter stroke which with high compression-like 11-1- allows it to rev higher maybe with the right stuff much higher than a 360 motor. Horse power is about air flow and a 7500 rpm 340 will take in more air and burn more gas than a 6000 360. That means more power. Now today 11-1 and higher compression is out for the street, so if you have to run 9-1 you are better off with a 360 motor. But a 13-1 compression 340 motor that revs to 8000+ will always be better than a long stroke low compression 360. Even if the 360 had 13-1 compression it still would not live or not live as long as a 340 motor would. Heck back in the early 70's when the racers had a 305 cubic inch limted they used to shorten the stroke even more down to 3 inch I believe. That cause the was no rpm limt and the higher you can spin a motor the more air flow-with the right heads and cam-it will flow. Now of days with our stinky gas and low compression a higher stroke is the way to go but its not the best way. As for less power at low rpms thats why there is 4000-5000 rpm TQ. Again this is for race motors.

When it comes to old car prices I have no idea why some are so high and others so cheap. Yes some make sense but many do not.

Better yet are paintings!! I look at some that go for muti-millions and say-I would not think it be worth more than a few hundred. ???

I think just because they are harder to find I would go with the 340 . My car has one that somebody dropped in it and I must say it responds very well. I replaced the headers and mufflers and it really sounds bad ass. I like it because you just can't just order one which makes it a little bit different from the next guys mopar. Now that's fine for street cruising but for racing then you have a whole nother story. I wouldn't mind having a built 440 in my car that's for sure. Just my  :2cents:

Some art dealer probably looks at a '71 Hemi Cuda convertible and says the same thing!  :smilielol:

I had a 75 Cordoba with a 360 that sounded pretty good with the air filter flipped upside down. The leather seats made the car though. What did they call the leather ??

I'd say a 340 just for its heritage with MoPar's Trans Am era...I probably would have went with a 360 in my Challenger, but I've always wanted to keep things "mostly" correct for it and followed through with the 340.  I prefer the 340 over a 360 mostly because they were known to rev a little higher and can produce around the same numbers within the same price range...Besides, when you beat a Chevy or Ford with a 350 or a 351C/W, you can tell them you have a 340 that spanked both larger-cubed engines. :2thumbs: :grinyes:

My wife has a 340 in her 73 Challenger.  I still have a long way to go... to get it road worthy (every time I turn around I have to stop the project for real life)

I have a guy that is talking about selling me his 72 (sounds like it needs work, but likely could be put on the road quickly) but he plans to keep the 360 drive train.

I have at my disposal a 383, 318, and possibly a 360. Unless I swipe the 340 frommy wife.  It would be easier to fix her car without the engine in it anyway.

Not sure yet how she would feel about it...but if she got to drive the car, I doubt she would have a problem.

340's are legendary. Unfortuneatley 360's came too late to the party. They never had high compression and the sort of goodies the 340 did. If you build a 360 like a 340 it is a very good motor. I have the smae dilema, but chose not to go 360 as my 70 never came with one.

Check out this book by Mike Mueller.  I didn't check for '73 stuff but I looked up some #s for my '72 and it had some hard numbers.

I don't have it, I just browsed through it at a book store...  :misbehaving:
