yes, but that does not allway mean better...I have seen many 400's that get stomped by a 340, 360, 383...

:chatting:  Interesting question.  Depends what kind of block your starting with for both choices is my first question.  I agree with the prior two emails about what they've said.  That is what I went to because of availability, ease of upgrading and potential power.  Of course depending on how much money you have a good case could be made for the 340 too.  I'm thinking of an aluminum block and light weight accessories.  I'm assuming you want light weight with significant power.  This is the kind of choice you have to give factors that might influence your choice.  Ball park amount of money you have for the parts, ability to do the work yourself and how your intend to use the power train (round town hot rodding, race track times, rallye contests, etc.).  :working:

A more easy question... What is the difference between right anf left?

Both are good engines. Both are virtually identical in terms of strengths and weaknesses. In terms of street engines, the 360 has it in my book.

And 400's eat 440's for lunch too.

They can all be built to make the same power, it's just your wallet, and low end torque, that will suffer.

the 360 is far easier & cheaper to get initially & has more stroke both advantages in m y book
the down side is the 360 only had cast cranks & by the time you buy a steel crank ofr a 360 you will be evry close to the entry price for the 340 , after that it will cost the same to build either

360 is a high performance engine IF you do the same things to it that the 340 had like high compression , decent heads & cam

I do believe, the late 70's E58 ran as strong, as the 340's, with crap for compression.

TreeFrog,

I can't answer your question, but as far as value goes, an E-Body with a 340 seems to be worth alot more than an E-body with a 360.   :clueless:

Probably because the E body price goes down as they get newer after '71 and the newest ones had the 360s.

I'm talking original factory intent, a rebuilt 360 I can agree with you, just as good.
