Starter recommendations
« on: November 18, 2006 - 01:57:45 PM »
My starter died on my 383 and i'm going to need a new one. I thought I saw a discussion about using the newer mini starters that Mopar is putting in their Dakotas. Can anyone confirm this? My starter is so shot I can't even get a rotation out of it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Get the mini--what type I am not sure, I have the Mopar perf. one but I paid $135 for it. Some say its the same as a $55 one for the newer v6 motors you can get at the auto store. Then there is the $200-$300 ones at Jegs and Summit. But get the mini.--take less space and is easyier to put in and take out.

Yes,

Oddly enough, the mini-has enough torque for any engine from a slant 6 to a Hemi. I have one on my 440.

The mini also uses less power to spin, that really counts on a hot day...........or a cold day...............

I am not so sure about more torque than a old reduction starter, but I think the higher RPM makes it appear that way, because it is using inertia to get past the compression strokes.

They got power to spare in them. Just put an MP one in my plow truck too. I've never had to repalce one. Even on a 12.8:1 440. One of the best things from MP/the factory in years.

OK Can anyone give me a part number for the starter. I'm serching on Dakotas 1995 and I'm getting a bunch of different starters. it seems there are differences based on the part numbers. Vin G seems to have something similar but different. It look like the starter for Vin X T and Y Dakotas seems to be the one but I'm not sure.

This is where I wne to get the pricing.

Thanks to everyone that gave me some info about the starter. I went to Pep Boys and got what I thing is a pretty good deal. After researching this issue for a bit of time I took  look at the starter image posted by Summit and it was the same starter as the one getting posted by regular parts stores online. The warranty was the clincher. Pep Boys took my name and address and basically told me the starter is covered by a life time warranty and it cost me $106.00. Minus the core charge that they credited me even though the starters weren't the same. The counter guy was pretty cool and swapped it right there as long as I was willing to leave the box with him. For $60.00 saved on a core charge they can keep the box. Summit/Mpoar was giving a 90 day warranty and the thing cost about $130.00.
I thing Pep Boys is the way to go.
And the thing spun my motor over like it was a toy! 10.2:1 compression and iy spun really fast. All good there.
A couple of shots of the thing in case anyone needs reference of what it should look like.
Needed to remove the plastic extension but it fit my 383 with no other alterations. I heard that some needed the stud cut. This fit with no issues.
Later all...

The problem with the mini starters is they sound wrong.  Sounds like my wife's Corolla starting up, and no long spin-down whine after starting...
