EDIT: I'm thinking the clue about gas means freon not gasoline. As always, I think everything is a trick question.   :pullinghair:

I've never pulled one all apart, but going off the AC Compressor theory, I will guess that its  a piston with some sort of boot?

nope, expansion valve is mounted on the lines at the fire wall and meters down the high pressure gas to be come a low pressure liquid.
