It's not in the rear or has anything to do with the fuel system.
It is an electrical system part.

It is part of a ballast resistor.
Do you know what part this is from?
Hint: Not part of the ignition system.
(I restore these devices and the stainless steel resistor coils in the picture were custom made for me.)

I would guess the older point style voltage regulator.

I will try to get something posted tomorrow. It will be hard to come with pics as good as yours Slotts.

The first picture was going to be the next clue and the second the final answer confirmation.
The other picture are ones that I am currently restoring.
