I believe you and OS are onto it, looking at it close, it does look like a steering wheel grip to the right. NZ, what's the story? It's day after tomorrow there and 8 hours behind us. LOL He'll chime in soon I hope.

The bracket doesn't look like the map light bracket. I don't recall that being on the trunk light either. 

 Was there a under hood light?
