Are all gear drives noisy?
« on: November 19, 2006 - 03:41:55 PM »
This is what I have on my engine right now. I'm considering changing it to a regular timing chain. My question is, if I left it, would it be a whine or not a whiner? Do some whine and some don't whine? Or do they all whine?

In my experience even the gear drives that are labeled as "quiet" whine. It is just in their nature to.

I would just use a good chain drive. Gear drives are for high rpm racing motors that get taken apart offen. I think the chain some how dampens what happens from the crank and camshaft, hard for me to expain but I have hear that those gear drives are not for long time high milage motors.

ti depends on the valave spring load , with high pressure springs a timing chain can stretch very quickly & a gear drive will not , it remains accurate for years . not all gear drives whine , they can be made to howl like a blower or they can be as quiet as a bad alt brg with a very slight noise to them , I cannot tell from your  pic which you have though

I got a milodon gear drive on this engine for my cuda. I don't think it's all that loud or annoying. Corse I have a hard time hearing with my helmet on.  Also 4.5 in collectors up close to the door hinges has a good tone too. When I am under the hood I don't hear the drive over the rest of the engine.

I'll get around to checking it when I have time and get a good pic of it to show you CP. Thanks.

Topcat, If I remember correct, I think the Geardrive you have with the two gears in the middle tend to be kinda loud, is it a Pete Jackson one by chance? I have a Milodon Gear drive with a single gear in the middle like Moparal on my 383. They seem to be a bit quieter.

Pete Jackson does have 2 idler gears but they make  both loud & quiet drives

I know it's not a Pete Jackson. I just can't remember the name right now he told me what it was.

Sure looks like a Pete Jackson to me (despite what you were told). I'm sure the floating dual-idler gear design is unique to them. Yes they are noisy but the Milodon unit uses a single fixed idler gear design that is much quieter and less stressful on the valve-train.

I'll call the previous owner and ask him what brand it is. You may be right on it being a Pete Jackson. I've never been around gear drives before so I can't tell.

Put a blower on it to cover the noise from the gear drive

The dual idler design makes it a Pete Jackson, or a cheap rip off of one. That style is only good for noise. A good cahin will be more stable than those gears. The good gear drive is made by Milodon. It is noisey, but not very bad. That PJ setup will be really noisey. (Noise means sloppy gears by the way...)
