How hard to change tail panels?
« on: November 20, 2006 - 06:02:06 PM »
I have a 71 Challenger that when I bought it had 70 taillights. I changed them out but someone had butchered the hell out of the original 71 tail panel. I have a parts car with a good tail panel and I want to change the panels out before I get my car painted. There looks to be a ton of spot welds  :pullinghair: Is it a straight forward job to change out the panels? I have access to a drill bit that is for spot welds and I have a small mig welder, will that be all I need? Thanks for any input.

You got it----Lotsa spot welds and take your time, remove the seam sealer inside the trunk pan along the tailpanel.Thought I had a pic of mine before and after but mine almost fell out due to rust.

Was one of the more pleasent metal jobs I did, lots of spot welds, i ended up cutting up the old one for easier access, it was shot anyway.
don't have any shots of the actual drilling or weldind, sorry.Rich

Cool, thanks for the input guys! I was considering just leaving it since you cannot see it behind the taillights but I would know it is there and I finally found a tailpanel so I will change it out.
