Project "Endless Challenge" 4l80E, dry sumped 500 wedge
« on: November 21, 2006 - 09:41:16 PM »
Well, I'm new here, but I figured after I looked around the site for while that I might need to post up my project progress to let you guys know what's been happening the past two years...

It all started with the unlucky test drive of my 70 plymouth duster.  I had just installed a new AlterKtion front suspension on my tubbed / bigblock duster.  Had it on there about 2 months and drove it around a little.  Sad part is, I went out for a tuning ride on e evening and the throttle got hung.  The rest is history.  I saved the engine, trans, rear end and the hood & decklid.  The car was totaled, my second 70 tubbed duster and it was a total wreck.  So I needed to start fresh.  My first duster suffered a wreck at the drag strip with only 10 passes on it.  The rod pulled out of the master cylinder at the start line and I went for a 100 mph ride in the 1/8th and couldn't stop.  Anyway, I decided it was time to move onto a different bodystyle.

Now, here I am with a 2,500.00 74 Challenger Rallye that I scooped up on a deal in the mountians of NC.  I allways wanted one, but could never afford one.  Seems like god was smiling on me that day...just like he smiled on me in all of my wrecks that I walked away from without a scratch.

Here she is when I first brought her home....

Well, the first pic was right after I brought it home, the rest were after I started putting the new quarters on....

Anyway, here's some more.  I split the wheel tubs and widened them a bit and followed that up with a custom bent cage...

Now, we get to the good stuff.  Front and rear suspesion.  Front is an AlterKtion, the rear is a ladder bar/coil-over setup.

Now the bling....rims and MOTA!!!!!!!  Rims are 15x6 front and 15x10 rear Boyd Coddington Smoothies.  The rear is a dana 60 that has been narrowed about 4 inches so I could run a deeper offset wheel.  I got the 60 out of a Ford truck, so it needed to be narrowed anyway.  It's filled with a 4.10 gear, auburn unit and moser axles.

The engine is a 500 inch wedge based on a 440.  Edelbrock heads, good size solid cam and ross flat tops.  Billet mains and studs round out the bottom end while an Indy intake holds a 1050 dominator.

Here's a couple with the engine in the car sitting at ride height.  Now all I have to do is finish my home brew watts link and get busy with some mock up.  Then, it's off to sandblasting and back for some paint and body.....then.....final re-assembly.

Yep.  The header collector "rings" are getting cut off and I'm using slip fits for the exhaust to mate up to the collector.  That will gain another 1/2 inch..lol.  You should have seen my two previous dusters...they were lower than this car.  I'm diggin' the pan clearance though......I took a stock pan and lengthend the sump, and installed trap doors so I could have more oil capacity and more ground clearance than with the milodon pan.

Looks great!!!   On the cage, are you going to run a-pillar down bars?  If not, the way you made the cage is a cool idea to get extra rollover protection without the hassle of the down bars through the dash.  Also are you going to run side door bars on the cage?

Yea, I'm going to run A-pillar bars and door bars.  There's just a few more things I need to do first before I finish that up.
