well, not only the spring, but the oriface the ball seals on is a "metered" part. SO smaller engines have a smaller oriface. The larger the oriface, the worse the "vaccum leak" on the carb, but the more pressure it can relieve. You want the one that will do the most work, with the smallest oriface. Oil coming out of the grommet means the grommet is hard and not sealing anymore.
