pistol grip rattle
« on: November 25, 2006 - 10:26:41 AM »
my shifter has a constant buzzy rattle sound while driving that goes away if you have you place your hand on it.
Any idea what it is and how to make it go away?

if it is the samesound as mine, it is the top cap showing the shift pattern, it rattles, I haven't figured out how to tighten it up, but put a samll baed of silicone under it and it has stopped ratteling.

definitely lower than the top cap.
Where would be the best place to look for removal/rebuild/replacement info?

The top bezel holder is staked under the indicator. It has to be broken off to take it off. If it is just the plastic handle, take them off then put a little silicone under them to glue them to the metal middle, before putting the screws back in. Gunslinger sells new shift indicators if you have to remove yours.

You did fix the engine or driveline vibration due to a bad balance job first right? Mu shifter used to rattle alot till I fixed my driveshaft and bad u-joint.

haven't done anything with the driveline yet.
Got the fuel side all new from tank to carbs though, so that's a start.

I think you'll find that when you fix your vibration, your shifter will sit there nice and quiet. Have you ridden in a well balanced 4/speed big block combo yet to see how smooth it is? When  you do, you'll see how easy it is to cruise as fast as you want with the engine revving beyond 5k.

what would be the best way to determine the source of the balance problem?

With the clutch depressed and the trans in gear, you're eliminating the trans, driveshaft, rear-end and wheels. Rev it up and if it isn't smooth, you have to look at your balancer, crank-rod-piston, flywheel combo. Has your engine been rebuilt by someone else besides you? Tell us whatyou know about your engine.

If it only vibrates at high speeds on the highway, you have to start at the wheels then move to the driveshaft.  jack it up and rev it in gear.
