cam selection
« on: November 27, 2006 - 07:35:12 PM »
Can someone give me some advise on cams?  I have a 70 chally 440  6 pack and want to put a "stock" cam in it.  It currently has a Comp Cam #21-223-4 and I would like to stay with Comp Cam.  How about a roller cam?  Worth the money?  I want a smooth idle and I'm not planning on any racing.  Any advise appreciated.
Thanks

Unless you are racing or spinning high rpms I wouldn't spend the money for the roller. I have a Mopar Purple cam that is supposedly a stock 6 pack replacement from the catalog and the car seems to run well.

Thanks 72 hemi  Does it still have that "throaty" sound at the exhaust?  Is the idle smooth?

That XE268 should idle as good as a stock cam in that engine. Is there a reason you want to change it out other than you're bored with it?

No reason other than it's apart and I like a smoother idle - and so does my wife!!

Chryco - Why the K56 or K58 and not the K52 or K54?  I'm a   :newbie:  when it comes to cam selection and want to learn about this stuff.   :2thumbs:
Thanks

check the archives there are 2-3 articles on cam selection & design
basically you want the get the right duration to put the powerband into the range you want the engine to run best , six pack run great between 1800-6500 rpm assuming you have a 4 spd or stall converter in the 2000 rpm range
