Some 383 bolt ons?
« on: November 28, 2006 - 06:51:45 PM »
This winter I want to bolt a few things on the 383.  I have 3 things and 3 questions about them that I want to bolt on for more juice that are easily swapped.

1. Now its an L code, want a 4 barrel.  What cfm and brand are recommended for everyday highway use, and the occasional munch on the gas?

2.  Intake mani, single plane, dual plane?  I read that the single plane is best for higher RPM?  I also want to use the original choke, but might not need it, seeing I only drive when its warm.

3.  Headers, what brand are best for the buck, not prone to leaks, and minimal modding to the exhaust?

I know Im probably asking for a lot with these questions, but I read an artice on Mopar Muscle online with these couple bolt ons, over 400 horse.  I dont want to do a cam, not now.  All this is on a 71 challenger 383.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

I recommend a dual plane intake Weiand has some nice low rise alum intakes , the RPM is cool but hard to fit under the hood
TTi is the best header , fit nice no leaks well made
I prefer a 750 Holley , probably the Avenger series will work great for you , everyone else will recommend the eddy 750 if you go that way get the Thunder AVS series at  least it is somewhat tunable unlike the afb series

Well since you asked, here is the way I would do it if it were mine.  It seems you have a basicly stock 383 and you are wanting to do some simple add-ons for increased power.  Since you are not changing heads or internals in order to turn more rpm's or strengthen the bottom end.  You are also not changing cams or doing head work.  That being the case, here is the route I would persue:

1)   I would use a Holley 750 double pumper
My reason is this --Old rule of thumb on carb cfm:  Take the cubic inches and double it as a good STARTING point.   A real hopped up engine can certainly handle more cfm.  In your case  383 X 2 = 766 cfm.  Great choice for your application IMO

2)   Since this isn't a high rpm engine, relatively speaking, I would go with a dual plane intake.  Decent mid/upper rpm power without sacrificing low rpm punch...

3)   TTi's  end of discussion...

All this is certainly MY approach and you will certainly get others here....   :cooldancing:

Is this engine totally stock right now?

I agree about the 750 CFM carb. If this is a stock engine, then maybe the Holley Street Avenger might be a better option over the double-pumper. It comes in a 770 CFM size, I believe. Electric choke too.

Headers are a pain to install on a Big Block E-Body. I'm on my second set now, and hope I die before I have to put another set on.  :smilielol:  If I can do it, anyone can. Don't let me scare you. Headers with some nice mufflers will increase your HP.

Yes, nothing has been touched since it was new

Exactly what I was thinking, I even wrote the part # down for that 770.  Great minds think alike!

i know that you all will probably think that I am crazy or something but i would go with the 650 CFM. I am running a 750 right now with a bigger cam and .030 overbore and it fouls plugs a lot and when i punch it, it pukes black smoke, that and it sucks gas like no other (10 MPG in town, 13 on the hiway)

just my experiance. if i am wrong.....somebody help me!! :hyper:

   WOWSA!!   :wow:

They have only made these carbs. for a couple of years now, so I can't imagine why one would need to be remanufactored.  :clueless: That price is a steal!!  :2thumbs:

Have you tried jetting it down some? That's about the gas mileage I get on my hopped 440, so don't feel bad.  :icon16: Just kidding here, but you should do a bit better. The idle fuel mixture setting might have something to do with it too. The plugs always tell the tale about running rich.  :grinyes:

Carb - Holley Avenger or 750 DP
Intake - Holley Street Dominator single plane if you can find one used.
Headers - TTI, they cost alot but you get what you pay for.

Thanks Evil, but some more questions-

Will the single plane fit under my flat hood?
Is the 750 too big, and can I bolt it on and run it without tweaking anything?

Sorry for all the questions, Im so used to tractors, all this v8 stuff is new  :faint:
