I am sure this has come up in the past. I'll ask anyway.

How can you tell the year of a 72-73-74 e-body? The differences seem very subtle to a semi-novice like me. ???

Heres what I do.....First I take a walk around the car, looking at all the items, then I go read the 6th digit of the VIN :roflsmiley: Seriously though, 72 can differientiated by the bumpers, stripe options, and interior (Hopefully the picture gurus can show you). I really dont know the differences between 73-74s so Ill just sit back and wait for someone else to comment

As far as Challengers go, it's the bumper guards. '72 had the narrow guards, '73 had the wider guards and '74 extended the black rub strip out further.

I believe the seat belts varied between the '73 and '74 models. '73's used a pin on the seat belt receiver while the '74's used the standard receiver to lock the shoulder belt. (I don't really know because I'm still missing my front seat belts.)  The easiest, but not always the best way to tell is that 340's were only offered up to '73, so the '74's biggest engine option could be the 360 they introduced for the E-bodies that year.  The best way to tell is the bumper filler guards were used on '73-'74's, '72's were tucked closer to the body like the '70-'71 models, '72s used chrome bumperettes while '73-'74's used the larger bumper guards w/extra rubber and had a metal back plate behind the bumpers.

If the grilles are gone the easiest way is from either the taillights or the side marker lights imo. The side marker lights are not inset like 70-71 'Cuda and Challenger, they are all plastic with no bezel. The taillights are distinct as well. The grille on the 72-74 Barracuda is similar to the 70 but the 72-74 Challenger grille is pretty different and features a sort of "sad" mouth. If they have the correct year rallye wheels the center caps are different than 70-71.

Yep, govt. regulations.
I think it was the same for all other models too.
