Cool, now all I have to do is find out which one I have, all I know about the work done was a 2500/2800 stall converter was put in(was on a list of things that were done to the car)
It's a 74 360 eng & 727 tranny, what should I look for (short of pulling the tranny)that probably won't happen till next spring with winter setting in here, Thanks, Rich.

If you never touched the flexplate, I would say that whoever put it on before you didn't get the crank bolts tight.

I'd like to blame someone else, but as I said, no noise before I took it apart, I've missed some easy things(like the neutral safty switch) so I can't swear I never touched em, so many things that I jumped around on because of lack of knowledge or parts, by the time I get back to em I have to dig to remember where I left off. anyway at least I didn't blow up the motor & to my amazement I did get it started , hopefully this first "back yard" resto will make #2 a little less of an adventure & I'll have a list of a million things NOT to do! hopefully I'll avoid at least half of them.   Rich.

When  you do pull the transmission, make sure the two dowel pins are in the block that line the transmission up correctly.

Yes the pins were there, gonna try & get some help for that project, now that more parts are on under there it's gonna be a little more diffacult. Rich.

Thanks for all the tips, today I managed to slide the tranny back a few inches (no easy task!)& found the plate to motor bolts way out, 1/8 to 1/4 inch , so I have to blame myself, must have tried to get it off when cleaning up the motor & got distracted & never tightened em, now I couldn't see if the plate was damaged, but I got em all tight, I drained the fluid & using a couple of 3" long bolts in place of the short ones to the motor, loosened all the connections, pulled the driveshart & pried it back about 2 or 3 inches, tried to shoot pics, but they don't show much, got the bolts tight & gave the floor jack a push with my foot & it slide right back in, put the converter bolts back in & redid all the connections, wanted to start it up soooooooo bad but all I got was click click   so while I was cleaning up I put the charger on , finished cleaning up well after dark, workin with a drop light I gave it another try, a couple a turns & then dead again, but no noise so thats a good sign, tomorrow greg 340 is workin with me, so I'll put the charger on before work & try to start it when we get back in the afternoon at least he knows what he's doing!
The jury's still out on the carnage, but what I'm hoping for is that I'll be able to start it every week or so till spring, when I pull the tranny down & get a better look.
The balancing seems to be in the plate, I see counter weight on it, here's a pick of it, if thats so, then i'll need the aftermarket plate with balance to replace it if it's ovaled out around the bolts.    correct? Rich.

Sounds like you found the culprit.     Also, it looks like an easy fix...   Let us know when you fire it up....

This is the flex plate you want: (the bottom one) you remove material from one side, it makes the other side heavier, there's your weight for balance.
