OK , the swirl marks on the end of the output shaft tell me that thrust washer went to thrust washer heaven. :lol2:
It got chewed up.That's going to be a little problem. If you put a new washer on there , it will just get chewed up again. You need to buff the forward drum where it rides, probably need to press the input shaft out of the drum after the snap ring is removed. The out put shaft might need to be replaced. It is hard to buff it with the center pin in the way.

Your end play should have been BIG! What was it any way?

Bob, that's where you measure it. It looks like a new washer betwen the output shaft and the forward drum and both new on the pump and in between the drums and it should be OK.

Give me a close up pic of the forward drum where that washer rides. That center pin on the front of the output shaft should be sticking out farther than that. I think it has contacted the forward drum and worn down or got shoved in.

TTM,  sorry for getting back to you so late.  The wife and I decided to take our kids to Disney's MGM Studio to see the Osbourn Light Festival.  We just got back a few minutes ago.  Let me put my daughter to sleep and I'll get you another close-up of where that washer rides.  I've also got a few other pics that I want you to see, they seem like some parts may be worn/broken off, but I'll let the expert determine that.  Give me 30 minutes and I'll have some pics for ya!  :2thumbs:

That'll be good news about the washers.  When I read it in the book and didn't see any, I thought I was loosing my head for a second....I thought I dropped them somewhere or it was stuck in one of the gears somehow.

I can tell you this has been an EXCELLENT learning experience for me.  I'm having a blast learning how to do this.   :2thumbs:

:roflsmiley:  That's funny...I can't tell you how incredibly smart this man is with the tourqueflights.  I skipped a step in my book by accident and was wondering why the extention housing comes off.  Mine seemed stuck, but when I PMed him, the instructions he gave me were identical to the book.  His knowledge is giving me the confidence to do this.  I can only hope that I'll be back  :burnout:  in my cuda soon.  I miss driving her around.  It's 77 today (Orlando) and I keep thinking about getting it done!  :working:  :2thumbs:

My father is coming down on the 29th of December, man is he gonna freak when he finds out I was able to rebuild it.  I asked him a while ago about redoing it and he said they were way too hard to do.  He's been a mechanic for 40+ years, owns his own garage in Boston and all so I didn't want to stir the waters  :stirpot:  :poopoke: by telling him I was doing it myself.  He's kinda old school when it comes time to doing things by myself.

Bob, chipped spots on the shell are fine, probably been there since it was new.

Pic 1.  Planetary is not chipped, that is a flat spot to keep the thrust washer from spinning. Here is another one taken apart.

Pic 2.  This is the thrust washer that was suppose to be in between the forward drum and the output shaft

Ok, I've definately got the washer in pic 1, but not pic 2.

Should I continue to disassemble the rest of the parts per the books instructions?  What's next?

Yes, take the rest of it apart
This is also what you are going to have to do:

Pic 1. Sand the output shaft around the center pin with 220 emery cloth wrapped around a half round file (keep sand paper wet with transmission fluid.)

Pic 2. Remove the snap ring holding the input shaft in the forward drum housing, place a penny on top of it so you don't ding the surface, and hammer it out with a punch.

Pic 3. This is what you want, the input shaft where you can get to it to sand it smooth.
When you get it smooth tap it back in gently and reinstall snap ring.

Mike,
If I don't have 220, will 150 work?  I just went to 3 different stores and no one has 220 (Lowes, Ace and Advanced Auto Parts).  :villagers:   :banghead:  :swear:  :stomp:
