Rebuilding the trani

The bushing is messed up . What did you install it with? It is probably mushroomed on the end. You might try filing the end of it on the inside to open it back up.

I can't remember, I think it was with a socket, but I do recall tapping with a hammer once it got real close to the edge.    I went to my local trani shop and they've got another bushing and seal coming tomorrow for me, just incase I need it.  I'll try filing it down and see how that works now.

You can also take a pocket knife and "scrape" a taper on the inside edge of the bushing. It is very rough looking where I made it green. Lube the yoke with some tranny fluid also before you install it.

Ok, filed it down (around the whole circle) and threw a small amount of grease on there and it slid right in! 

I'm done for the night, I've gotta tailshaft seal coming tomorrow so I can't put the driveshaft completly together, but I'm leaving it in the trani for the night.

Sorry for the long delay in a progress report, but I didn't do any work on it Thrusday or Friday.  I had lots of other stuff to do.

At any rate, I worked on it tonight and the driveshaft is in and all hooked up.  Starter is in, both tie-rods (inner and outter on both sides) have been replaced including the sleeves and the Link between them is back on.  Oil Filter housing is back on, Passenger side headers and exhaust is all hooked up. 

Tomorrow leaves drivers side headers and exhaust, then the valve cover gasket on that side, distrubuter cap and rotor, Trani dip stick, hook up the battery, then add all the fluids (oil, trani fluid, and coolant). The thing I'm saving for last is the linkage.  I'm not sure how it goes, so I'll hook it up last.         I will give another report tomorrow night, hopefully it will be running and shifting correctly!

All set, everything is in and ready to go except the linkage.  I'm having a bit of trouble with the linkage.  I took it off at the trani, not the carb and it looked a little make-shift, so I'm gonna try my best to get it on and correct.

If it is make-shift,we are going to have to make sure it is right or it will mess up all your hard work. Make sure that the short lever on the tranny is all the way back tight when the carb is wide open.

you mean the one in the pic?  If so, is it supposed to swing from the bellhousing towards the back of the trani?  that's the way mine is swinging now, but it doesn't seem right because if it swings towards the bellhousing with the linkage on, then it won't go anywhere...does that make sense?  I'll try to take some pics.

Here's a couple of pics of my linkage.  One is the top view, and the other two is the small lever, both with it forward (towards the bellhousing) and back (towards the rear of the car).

It should start out at the front and swing to the rear as you open the carb. Highly recommend you find a stud 14-11-40 in your picture and use that on your carb linkage.

Ok, I just wanted to make sure as it didn't seem to fit quite right.  I forgot to take a pic of this other piece that I have, but I'm gonna try again to figure it out and see what I can come up with.  I'll post another pic in about 20.

OK, that piece that I was unsure of was the shifting linkage.  I figured it out and it was ready to go.  It kicked over right away and after the smoke cleared (from an accidental spill of trani fluid on the headers) it sounded good.  I took it for a short, slow ride and the trani needs adjusting.  At first when I let off the gas, the car would stop almost immediately, as if the parking brake was on, but after that one stop, it rode fine.      

My shifting linkage is all messed up b/c it won't go into park.  I think the shifter linkage isn't tight enough.

At any rate, it's a 99% success.     I have to take it to the shop to get a front-end alignment and then it should be good to go.  I'll post another progress in a couple of days (or when the shop can squeeze me in). 

I can't say enough how much I owe you Terry.      Do you drink?  If so, send me your fav. beer or liquor and I'll make sure I hook you up.

It's too hard to tell.  It's shifting into drive almost immediately, so I'll have to do a few more adjustments to it, but not tonight, I'm beat.  It's jsut a good feeling knowing it's running and 99% complete.
