.060+ over
« on: December 06, 2006 - 05:09:29 PM »
Just found out my 440 ci is .060" over and still .002" oval.    :stomp:   Any ideas or sources for a .70" over piston?

Don't know what the limit for the bore on a 440 is. 0.070" may be pushing it, but that would be a 0.050" over on a 400 piston. I wonder if that would be easier to find. (But I don't know if the wrist pin diameter is the same, or location with respect to the top of the piston either.) Then there's always sleeving.

have the walls checked for thickness first,  I have seen blocks that were under the minimum .125 wall thickness at stock bore when they left the factory & I have seen mid 70s "thin wall " blocks test at over .300 which would allow a .350 overbore safely & still have .125 wall thickness
I would contact Diamond , JE , Ross for a custom .070 over piston

I was thinking the same thing, but I really have never known of anyone to sleeve a Mopar block...I have heard of Ford/Checvy guys doing it.

I've done it a bunch of times. The sleeved hole is stronger than the originals you leave. If you're at .060 now, I second the "have it sonic tested" first if you want to go .010 over that. It will be a custom piston. If this is for a performance build, I would definately find another block. A trailer queen might be fine, but at that point, you could also just re-ring it the way it is now (very loose) and run it. :dunno:

Thanks for the ideas.  This is a 70 R/T chally vert. and just to have fun with.  No racing but I do want to drive it in the spring and summer.  If I re-ring it it should run OK without plug fouling or oil burn - right???? :dunno:

well, .002 isnt much really. I wouldnt expect it to run or last as well as a complete rebuild..But you're on the verge of being out of cylinder. IMO, you'll lose less by doing a ring and bearing job with file to fit rings and running pistons loose than spending the big $$ on a full boogie rebuild, custom pistons, and then have cooling issues or possible cracks later. I've run bores as large as .004" too big and had decent life from it. They do sometimes use oil, but you are really trying to cut your losses vs. extracting the Nth degree of performance and life. (performance and life span are inseperable). You could also look into finding an old school machine shop that can knurl your existing pistons... :dunno:
