How You Found Your Car
« on: December 10, 2006 - 10:40:07 PM »
I did a search for a Cars in Barns theme and didn't really come up with anything. So what I would like to do is start a thread that is along the lines of Cars in Barns but from the members of this board. So post up your pics of you negelected cars when you found them.

I will start by posting my FY1 70 Challenger found in a barn sitting since 83.

Not neglected as such but in Mad Max uniform......I still have the trunk with "spoiler" or mini dam (lol) in storage.
Long story short for my find - searched 1-2 years for 70 R/T, then one pops up 30 minutes from home, 440 numbers matching and been in NZ for over 30+ years - lowest priced offered, I'll take it! I found the 'Cuda on Trade-Me (NZs eBay) and I was close to buying the same car 1-1/2 years earlier.......couldn't believe it when I saw it again. These cars are as rare as hens teeth down here so you have to grab it when you can - you snooze, you lose!!

Good idea for a thread Lunchy!

I found mine through a car dealership in Georgia back in 1995.  It was being stored in a warehouse for safety.  They did not know what they had.

I do not have any pictures of it originally, but imagine my Challenger with a White vinyl top, side molding, flat hood, 318, steel wheels, no spoiler, and no rust (none).  It still has its original interior, except for the carpet.

It had been repainted before I got it, and we repainted it again, but it still has its original red paint under the hood.

eBay, for the challenger, was for sell 3 times before I got it, slowly the price dropped, over 4k by the time I got it.  However I still think I paid too much :roflsmiley:  My satellite was in a free ads paper we pick up.  Made a good friend with the previous owner too, he has the same cars as me now, challenger and satellite

My dad knew a guy with a bunch of rare mopars, so we arrange to meet at his place.  He only wanted just us two to come, no one else, later I found out why.  He opens up his garage doors and what is sitting there?  One plum crazy AAR, Hemi Orange 440 Superbird, Red Daytona.  All in mint, perfect condition   :eek2:  I thought I died and went to heaven.  Oh, and he has a T/A in the works, no rust  :screwy:.  After he gives us all the info on all the cars, I ask him to find me a 70-71 challenger.  I figured that if anyone knew where one was, he did.  He said ok.  Next day, no more than 18 hours later, he calls on the phone and says he found one.  I was like WTF???  He said that it was only a few minutes away, and he had already looked at it, talked to the owner, and if I didnt want to buy it that he would!  LOL!  #'s matching VERY original car, with minimal rust issues.   :o  I looked at it, fell in love, and no more than 24 hours later than when I first told him I wanted a challenger, I told the owner I would take it.  Talk about some divine intervention  :swaying:

Here it is when I first saw it

I was in a rush to replace my '73 Cuda, after it was smashed on the highway, and after I'd done, and learned to do, so much to it.  I found my 440 Barracuda in Indiana on Ebay.  Now, if I can just make it the way I want it  :working:

I found mine in a local advertising paper from Michigan.  The car was listed in bold letters, "FOR SALE: '73 CHALLENGER $2,000.00".  He had a couple older vehicles listed and were all around the same price. (had like a project El Camino listed, a '46 Dodge Business Coupe, '36 Mack fire truck, and something else.)  "I couldn't pick up the phone fast enough" was my feeling after reading the ad...A week later I managed to arrange to go see it...Here's what it looked like at the time...He only had it for a couple months and wanted to keep it, but didn't have the resources to restore it.  I took around 30 photos, had to wait for them to develop, then ran it all past my neighbor who runs the autobody shop where I take my car.  He gave me the okay on its condition and I went back home that night and closed the deal.  What's funny is I was the third person to go see it, but everyone else wanted the car for nothing and passed on his asking price. :nono: ::)  I got the car for $1,750.00. :)

I found this 73 Rallye sitting under a tree. ($500) The streaks on it are green mold.  The next pic is of it done.  The 70 R/T 383 4 speed is still with me.  I have not redone it. ($1100 with a 71 R/T included)  It has had most of the bad parts removed from it and is in storage.  This 71 R/T was found as is and used for parts.  ($200) At the time you could buy a driver for $800 if you looked around.  It would have taken more than $800 to fix this one so it went to parts.  The biggest expense back then was spending $50 to replace the R/T hood. Part of the front frame rail is in my buddys Superbird since no reproduction parts were available when we did the Bird.

I placed an wanted add on Cuda World for a '71 Cuda, and had also placed an add on Craigslist for the same but had added wanting a  '70 Challenger RT/SE as well.  A super nice guy from MI replied on the '71 Cuda at the same time I got an an email from a guy in Kansas on a real RT/SE.  I ran into some financial issues and had to bail on the '71 Cuda (more $) but shot a offer well below sellers asking on the RT/SE.  He bit and I snagged ur up.
