does this sound right?

 I'm currently in Watertown NY (upstate) coming back from Canada and after crossing the 1000 mile island bridge back to the USA the speed limit goes from 60 MPH to 40 MPH. I of coarse slow down the rental car at first sight of the 40 mph speed limit sign, continue to drive and see 4 state troopers one of which walking in the middle of the road waving me to the shoulder.  He walks up and ask me for license and registration, then ask me if I know why he pulled me over, I handed him what he asked for and said I wasn't sure.  He then said I was clocked at 60 MPH in a 40 MPH zone, I stated I was doing 40 to 45 mph and was slowing down as quikly as I could after seeeing the change in speed limit.  He proceeded to tell me he clocked me at 1350 ft @ 60 mph. (seems like a long way away to me, 4 1/2 football fields or over 1/4 of a mile away) We agree to disagree at this point.

What I don't understand is the ticket is electronic, I have to mail or appear in 20 days a plea. After that a fine will be assesed.  IN Missouri the fine is clearly defined on the base of the ticket based on how many miles an hour over you are ticketed for, is this normal everywhere else?

Sounds like a speed trap to me...       Don't know if it would be worth the effort to try and fight it long distance.       Even though this sounds screwy to me, it might be cheaper to pay the fine and write it off as part of the cost of doing business.....     


P.S.   Just think of the times your "fudged" the speed limit in your Mopar and didn't get caught.  It all evens out.....

Not around here in Michigan . . . I have heard of places where they photograph your license plate and send you a ticket for traffic violations but never heard of an electronic ticket.  I would enter my plea of not guilty and go to court depending how far away it is.

P.S.   Just think of the times your "fudged" the speed limit in your Mopar and didn't get caught.  It all evens out.....

Suprisengly never fudged the Mopar ticket, been lucky and haven't got one, think I would probably be proud to pay that one when it comes in, and of coarse keep a copy!

let me clarify, it was made on a computer right in his car and I recieved printed copy. all the Law enforcement people here, do you determine fine after the fact?  never heard of that before unless you plead not guilty.

As far as I know in Pa the fine is set by how many miles you are over the limit. Not that I ever got a speeding ticket.

I have never had a speeding ticket either.  But from Red's experience, GA charges per mile an hour over the limit.

  speed trap to me too!!!got one in wisconsin last year in my intrepid,going in a pass zone around a car going around 40 mph in a 55,going down hill.nailed it and he got me for doing 85 mph in a 55mph.wouldn't give me a break after telling him i had it on cruise for the last two hours and it was a new car and not used to it.   really it's the truth.paid my fine on the spot 150.00 later and on my way.what a bummer.   look at your pros and cons on thiscan you win/better to just pay it/insurance,any buddy vouch for you.not sure on this one.enough of my     anyway good luck.----dave---

I understand what you guys are saying, but i have to send in a plea then they send me a fine to pay. Nothing states what it could be based on MPH over posted speed limit, therefore it could come back at any price.

Get Screwy squirrel to go up there and "discuss" the situation, he's a New Yorker................he'll get your fine doubled    This does sound like a speed trap, they probably determine the fine by having a base amount to which is added $$$$$$ depending on how much ya try to get out of it. I agree, the unknown amount would scare me, it could be $50.00 or it could be $500.00    Good luck Scott.
