need help, I've read every rad support ? in this forum.
« on: December 14, 2006 - 12:43:50 PM »
OK ,here goes. i have a 22 inch opening  rad support in my73 challenger,  the 340  is out and planning on putting a 440 in her. I know there is a right rad support section made to open her up to 26 inch, don't really want to do this. If i could find a rad out of a 70/71,, part # 2998960 this would fit right, but finding one and the costs would be pretty high?.If i could find a aftermarket rad 3-4 row  this would keep her cool right, but where do i get one? I  would like to stay away from an alumium rad ,unless I have no other choice. Any custom shop that make them (drop right in without and Mods) and for a shrould?  My plan is to keep it stock looking with a shrould and to keep her cool.

Any suggestions would help, iam sure there are members in here with the same ride or in the planning stages for their ride thxs. I have read every rad question in this forum good advice for sure.

Another ? anybody know what these rads are out of they are either dodge/plymouth part# 2445649 with steel shroud attached AND part# 2898054  (38083) thanks any comments would be a great help.

These guys list a replacement but note they specify CROSSFLOW  :clueless: , 22" shrouds are pricey like almost $200.00

it should be possibleto recore your rad to a high efficiency 3 core which will work fine for the 440

I had the same problem a while back and the solution I found was to use a 22 inch radiator from a roadrunner (68 or 69, I dont remember which). Anyhow, it was a 3 row rad and I bought it from paddock for around 300 if I remember correctly. There was one problem....the bottom outlet was on the wrong side, so I had to take it to a local radiator shop and have them move it(cost me 50 bucks). When I had the car running, my built 383 never came close to overheating and I am confident enough to reuse that radiator with the 451 Im putting in soon.

Always make sure the rad shop does not mess up the internal tranny cooler in the rad if it came with one. I had some dunkus swap inlets and outlets on a nice 3 core for my Challenger and ended up trashing a nice 70 'Cuda 340 727 because it was passing glycol/water into the trans. That was one of the reasons I parked the car for 10 years with only 50 miles on a fresh 340  :swear: Now I do not trust any internal cooler and just bypass them with an aftermarket cooler attached to the radiator.

I'm still running the #'s correct 383 (22") in mine. Only time I ever had a problem is letting NIKKI idle for to long. And I believe a front mounted fan would cure that. The only mod I have made is adding a catch can for overflow.

Never thought of that. My car is a four-speed anyway so it wouldnt matter much for me.....
