Any idea why I'm not getting any electrical power... anywhere?

'73 Rallye Challenger. Transplanted 440.

Doing some guage work on my car and got to the point where I needed to test my power source.

Hooked up the battery... nothing. Not even a dome light.

Checked the battery, looked pretty dead. No bubbles.

Charged that over night, hooked it up... nothing.

Took a known good battery out of my Z and hooked it up... nothing.

Fusable link looks intact but my positive battery cable looks like it's seen better days. Old, corroded, etc.

Car fired up fine that morning before I took the guages apart. Positive terminal was disconnected before I did anything so I wouldn't think there was any chance that anything got fried while I was unhooking my guages.

All the interior fuses look to be intact.

Ideas?

Also: Is there a difference between small and big-block battery cables?

A quick question. Are your gauges installed right now? You will get nothing if your amp-meter is disconnected. 


There is a difference in small block/big block battery cables, but I believe it has only to do with the length of them.

When you do connect the amp meter... make sure the gauges are totally in place.  I truly hate to make a confession here since there is no Priest around, but I'll let loose. I just connected my amp meter to get the car started. It was out of the pod, and just hanging there. Yep, it touched metal(ground). I had maximum smoke from under my hood.      I totally fried the fused linkage.    Yep, I won't do that again!!

That's good to know.

I actually had my guages out and resting on my column while I looked for a good 12v source for my guages and fortunately never let the positive touch the frame.

I'll keep your hard-learned lesson in mind next time.

you can just boolt the 2 wires together & bypass the guage

I kinda got freeked out a few days ago.  Rain was comming and me with no glass in the car. !!! I started my car , drove it out of the garage., turned off the engine.  Hooked up the tack and tried to start it again. It would not do anything.  Not even click. Finally found that the ground wire on the starter relay was loose and that fixed that particular problem.  I still got some but that fixed that one anyway.  David
