Should be Burnt Orange again soon!
« on: December 28, 2006 - 02:46:14 PM »
Hoping to get my '70 Cuda back from paint in the next few weeks. Started in February, into media blast in April and delivered to the body shop in May. Had great progress till October when it stalled due to a lot of work at the shop. That's OK I've been restoring all the bits and pieces in anticipation of the Cuda's return. Plus I've been driving it for 32 years so it deserves some rest.

Interesting item - when the car came back from blasting you could see the steel factory stamp on the roof! It had the factory ID, "Cold Rolled" stamped in a black square with the date 11-26-69. I've posted that with some other pics.

Looks like it's coming along nicely!   :grinyes:   Love it when the car returns from the media blaster.  Thats when you really know how much work you have to do!   :worshippy

You betcha! I was worried about blasting since I've heard stories about warped panels. Some prefer dipping but I was concerned about losing the factory sealer where you can't get at it. I was also pleased that the car looked no worse than when it was in its original paint. The original owner was a high school classmate and I knew he religiously washed off the road salt and I stopped driving it in the winter after 1975. All of the original number stamps, welds, etc were in great shape where the metal didn't get replaced.

From what I can see in the pics yours looks pretty solid! I hope it continues to look that way after the paint is stripped. Let me know how you make out.

It's cool that you found the "COLD ROLLED" stamp on the roof panel.  I run a machine shop & the steel mills always roll-mark some form of identification onto raw material - that is truly a cool find!

It wasn't so solid, that picture is a year old. Had to replace the quarters. There are a thread about my resto here on cc.c. Car is now green like you see in my avatar pic.

Car is FINALLY off of the rotisserie. I posted this originally in December after the body work was completed. Right after that the body shop got busy and it sat on the rotisserie in a corner until last week. I've mounted a dummy drivetrain to get it back on the wheels and off of the roti. Even though it's taking a real long time it's worth the wait. The shop manager is well versed in the E-body details and is doing a fantastic job. Unfortunately I forgot my camera so I only have some cell phone camera shots - but there will be more!

OK, sorry for the lag in showing updates! Things have been going slow, missing/bad parts etc holding me up. Some of my posts seem to have dropped off, so I apologize for the lack of continuity, but here they are:

Engine has been fired on a stand (some of the missing posts had the YouTube link for the video), all the brakes are done, body is plumbed and wired, rear is out for rebuild. As soon as the rear comes back, I'll be mounting the drivetrain and dashboard and firing it in the car. Big step!  :cooldancing:
