MSD ignition coil
« on: December 29, 2006 - 08:02:27 AM »
Got some bling for the Chally  :clapping:but it came with strange instructions. Recieved an MSD Blaster 2 pn8202 coil that I want to install on electronic ignition. The 'Wiring to points or stock style distributor' part of the instructions say to install a .8ohm resistor in series with positive side of the coil. Don't I already have a balast resistor on the firewall that does this same function? Though I don't have a points distributor the instructions say 'or stock style distributor' is the resistor still necessary?

Typically it will tell you if you need the resistor in the instructions for your ignition box.
I believe it is only necessary if you are using points instead of a magnetic pickup.  :dunno:

What electronic ignition system are you using?

You have it right. The Mopar ballast resistor will work for you, but it is probably about 1.2 ohms. I know MSD makes a .8 ohm resistor, so you can use the Mopar one until you get the right one(try Summit Racing). Yes, the resistor is necessary, otherwise the coil will eventually burn itself out.

I have never used a resistor with any of my Blaster coils ( I have run about 4 different ones on 4 different cars) never burnt one up yet! :dunno:

A quick question... Did you have a Mopar ignition system , or something else? I'm not trying to be smart here, just trying to learn.  :grinyes:

Both Mopar and MSD 6A. I was told to get the benefits of the Blaster coil, you need to give it 12 volts (like a G.M. HEI system.)  :swaying:

Thanks.

Honestly, there are some coils that need the ballast resistor, and some that don't. It's hard to keep track.  :grinyes: The Accel needs it for anyone else that needs to know.

I had an interesting experience with a Blaster this last summer a friend had wired his coil & it had 2 wires to the positive terminal  , anyway the car was misfiring & there was oil streaming out of the coil , turns out the additional wire to the coil was bypassing the ballast & literally cooking the coil with 12+ v to it , it lived quite a while running like this

Just got back from a 150 mile drive today. I stopped for lunch and pulled the coil wire off because I couldn't see the car from where we were sitting. After eating and all that stuff , I went to put the coil wire back on and noticed the top of the coil tower was full of oil from the coil. I never had that problem before. The coil was not hot or nothing like that. Anyway,  I drove it home with no problems. Once I got home I took it off and the oil was coming out thru the tower. My coil is mounted straight up (vertical). I have the stock Chrysler Ign. orange box and a single ballast resistor the coil is a Accel superstock coil , (yellow in color). I think but not positive it could be 20-23 yrs old. Do you think I have a problem or is the coil just old. I have to find my ohm meter to check it.....Vin.....

I think your coil is telling you it's about to go. Leaking oil not a good sign.

you need the resistor unless you are using an MSD igntion box , then the power to the coil comes from the box.
