Shifter for my 4 speed?
« on: December 30, 2006 - 09:38:33 PM »
I need a new shifter for my Cuda.  The one in it now is junk and before I take it back out on the road, I would like to put a good one in it.  I haven't crawled under the car to look at the trans.  All I know is that it is a 4 speed and it is behind a 340.  I have been told that more than likely it is a A833.  What hurst shifter will fit this transmission?  A part number for both the shifter and the linkage would be greatly appreciated.  I would like to get one with a short throw handle if possible.  I was looking at hurst's street super/shifter and I really like the way it is designed.  I will never have a console in the car so I will not have to worry about clearance issues with it.

I have used the Hurst super Comp + , the factory shifter had longer levers which could probably used from the one in your car
often just cleaning & greasing the shifter will make it work like new as well
Brewers , Passon & PG classics all have new shift rods , using a short lever on the tranny like the factory T/A ones will shorten the throw

Okay, I've researched a little more on this and think that I may have something.  While reading my mopar performance book, it says that the pistol grip shifter handles that were reproduced work with hurst competition plus shifter part number 391-6769, and shifter installation kit number 373-4089.  After searching through hurst's online catalog, summit and jegs websites, I could not find this part number shifter.  However, I did find a dodge/plymouth application shifter part number 391-6789. Was the part number 391-6769 a misprint in the mopar catalog?  I have a hurst competition plus shifter in my Camaro and I really like it so I would like to go the same way with the 'Cuda, but I want the pistol grip handle too.  Does this combination of parts sound like they should work for my car?

Shifter # 391-6789
Shifter Install kit # 373-4089
Pistol Grip handle # P4510612

it will not be a misprint , the exact original shifter for the E bodys has no be available for years , You may want to contact Brewersa & Passon to see what parts they may have though
the Super comp Shifter will work , I didn`t think the rods [install kit was still availble from Hurst still either so that probably will not work ,, AGain Nrewers or Passon should have the correct rods if yours really need to be replaced , often just heating the adjuster nuts & cleaning the threads & coating with anti - sieze will save the shift rods
the New pistol grip handle are all snap in style , the Super comp shifter will use a bolt in stick so you will have to drill 2 holes in the handle to match the shifter

chryco physco, I looked through the hurst catalog tonight at work and found only one shifter in the entire catalog that may work.  Is this the one that you mentioned?  The super/street3 shifter.  Hurst has the chrylser transmissions designated in their catalog as follows;
421 New Process A-Body
422 New Process B-Body
423 New Process B & E bodies
The catalog said that this shifter would work on the 422 & 423 style.  http://go.mrgasket.com/pdf/HURST.pdf
On page 27, it gives a description and what it fits, and they have pictures of the transmissions on page 53.

I checked out those companies that you mentioned and will use them if the shifter in the car turns out to be an original e-body hurst shifter.  I'm going to check it out tomorrow, and hopefully I can go that route.  If not, I wanted to see if the above would work for the car.

Isn't it a reverse lockout?

It's a reverse lockout Neil. I've got one of those shifters lying around somewhere in the garage, I picked it up some time back witha an E body pistol grip lever on it!

Yep I had that shifter in my car too!  Still have it if you need one.  Worked just fine but I bought a new rebuilt one from Brewers.  :2thumbs:

Its so can don't accidentally shift into reverse and blow the trans . . .   You'd have to really screw up to get your shifter all the over to reverse while shifting though . . . lol   :screwy:

I just got the shifter out of the car.  Its an a-body push in style.  The number on the reverse lever was 6353 and it has a push in style handle. The 1-2 and 3-4 shift rods where hooked up on the trans but the reverse rod was cut off about 2" from the shifter.  :clueless:  I hope I can get one from brewers and that they will accept this one as a partial core.

I didn`t know the T/A ones were shorter-any idea by how much?Anybody reproduce them?I`d love to shorten the throw on mine.Maybe I could just drill a new hole in the ones I have?
