Best location for Electric Fuel Pump on a 71 Challenger
« on: January 04, 2007 - 12:58:10 PM »
Hello everyone,

Joined the board a while back but have never posted. I have a question about mounting a fuel pump. The car is a 71 Challenger R/T. I am running a solid roller cam so I am going to an electric fuel pump. I have a 3" TTI exhaust system out the back so there is not a lot of room back there, but I was wondering where the best place to mount the electric pump would be. It's a stock tank in the stock location. Thanks.

Well generally to the left side above the diff as electric pump want to push not pull , I would use a Mallory or BG fuel pump , the Holleys are problematic & LOUD , the other option which I prefer is to use a HV mechanical pump on the engine

You can go electric. Mallory makes a real quiet pump. It would save you a little bit of trouble to just install a Hi-Volume mechanical pump, as Chryco suggested. Carter/Federal-Mogul makes a good one.

Well, I want to use a mechanical fuel pump, in fact I have one. But everybody says that the fuel pump pushrod is not compatible with a steel billet core on the cam. Nobody makes a compatible fuel pump pushrod for BB Mopars. Is anyone here running a mechanical pump on a billet steel roller? Thanks.

I doubt your cam even has a lobe to operate the pushrod

It does have a lobe. In fact, I called Comp Cams about this. It is not a real radical cam, it's one of their street rollers, .564/.570, 274/280 adv. It is going in my 406 BB, which has ported Eddy performer heads, Ross pistons, Manley H-beam rods, 3.38" stroke 383 steel crank. I built this engine with the Hemi 6.965" rods with the 99495 Ross piston, they are 1.32 CH. Block is 400, .030 over, 0 decked for a 10.8 to 1 CR, heads were cut .060 and CC @ 71CC. Performer RPM manifold with AED worked 750 DP. Car is a 71 Challenger R/T 4 speed car with 3.55 Suregrip. It's a numbers matching car, so I pulled the original 383 and built this engine to play around with. I think it will be pretty stout.

I put mine on the passenger side behind the rear. Sorry for the not perfect underside...it got driven  :icon16:

As far as holley goes. i paid $65 for a brand new pump on ebay. i have not one complaint. Is it loud? not in my opinion, it sounds like an electric fuel pump.  Gotta pay to play somewhere, it just means i need louder mufflers when i cap the exhaust

i mounted it on two rubber little blocks, the line front to back has 3/8" rubber line slipped over anywhere it comes close to the body so it doesnt vibrate against it. And rubber line before and after the pump.

:iagree: That is where I mounted mine. I love the electric fuel pump, for me it makes starting these cars a lot easier. Good luck.
