shock question
« on: January 05, 2007 - 05:52:28 PM »
I bought my 1973 challenger 4 months ago it has supercomp rear springs the stance is very nice. It has cheap shocks the ride is pretty rough the guy I bought it from said the shocks were made for some big chrysler car can't remember what. What I am wondering will better shocks improve my ride any and   would I have to have longer shocks than what come on the car orginally. I am just trying to figure how come he had shocks for a different model car on it. Maybe the springs were from something else? :pullinghair:

probably used the Imperial shocks for their longer lenght see if you can find a better quality shock for that application although generally cheap shocks will ahev the softest ride quality

I just put a set of Konis on my '70 'cuda.  They're adjustable for your own comfort level or driving style ... mine are set pretty stiff for the street because of all the front end weight of the big block, but I adjust them to soft for the drag strip for weight transfer.  Konis are expensive, but not more than $25 - $50 more than another decent brand.     Beware of the rear mounting stud though.  There are two sizes and the Konis only fit the smaller.  The larger size is 11/16" and requires drilling the shock's bushing with a drill press.

I found out the shocks are for 1970 imperial with the mopar super comp springs can you use shocks that are made for the challenger. Is anybody using these springs with different shocks? I would like it ride a little better even if I had to change the springs the ride is very rough. Thanks Bill :wow:

I'll throw my 2cents in & say different shocks may change and improve things but from what I have been able to understand the Super Stock springs are not going to be your best handling or riding selection. They are made for weight transfer in a straight line. I notice that you have a lot of tire and maybe some serious wheel offset that those springs are allowing so a better riding spring is probably going to require some other changes. You might consider removing one of the shorter leafs but ultimately softer springs with less arch is going to be the solution.
Most folks here recommend having  http://www.espo.com/ build a set to suit your needs.
They, I'm sure, could shed some light on the situation

I swapped out the stock springs in my Cuda for Super Stock springs and the ride is definately harsher. I think the springs are what is affecting your ride, not the shocks. I also went the Imperial shock route, the S/S springs raise the car approx 2" and the longer Imperial shocks allow for full travel without hitting full extension.

Thanks for the help guys I am going to think seriously about changing the springs out for something else the car is just a street car anyway. Will I have to change anything if go to a different spring maybe front hangers?  I have  275-60-r15 on the back with crager s/s wheels. I wonder if I will still have enough clearance? Bill
