Just a point that might have been said already but I missed?

If you select the axle gears that allow you to cruise at your highway speed, at the same rpm as your engine makes peak torque, then you will get the best gas mileage.
Maybe this is a big part of why some of the big blocks seem to be getting better mileage than some of the small blocks here.

True. But $6.50 a gallon hurts the pocket big time. :crying:

Well the way I see it, if your car is using a lot of gas for its size and power, it probably is not tuned as good as it could be.

Although, having said that, there is a big fuel consumption difference between best economy and best power.

So I tune my Challenger to give me around 13:1 air/fuel ratio under all driving conditions (best power ratio for a 440 I have found) and 14:1 at idle.

I have tuned many carbs for people and many of them are not even on the idle circuits at idle speed. Their throttle blades are too far open at idle due to the bigger camshafts everyone around here uses. Coupled with not enough initial advance (too much advance in the distributor) they burn lots of fuel at idle. Which kills the around town fuel consumption.

Just cranked the Challenger for the first time in about a year and a half....three-fourty single four-barrel ... less than a min. on a quart of gas....

Since the tank is out of the car I was using a Mason Jar....not sure what road milage is, as I was on jack stands...I thing I will need a longer hose and at least a gallon jug.

That might get you to the end of the driveway.  A quart of gas in a minute is ALOT. Were you gunning the engine?

I guess VERY few of us have anything to brag about, but I would like to hear from someone that has a 70 E-Body with the slant-6. I'm just wondering if it could hit 20MPG on the hiway, or not.  :clueless:

My '71 Challenger (318-2V, automatic, 2.6 gears) used to get 15-16MPG on Union 76 leaded premium, city or highway.  It had dual exhaust on stock manifolds, and the Direct Connection electronic ignition kit, and if I remember correctly had initial and vacuum advance tweaked for best performance with premium; it pinged on regular.

In a word, crappy. In two words, REAL crappy. 440sixpack, 3.55 gears, automatic, about 8 or 9 miles a gallon. But I'll be the first to admit that I don't waste any time nailing the gas pedal to the floor whenever I can. It's not about the mpg, it's all about getting that big grin on your face!
