should I weld the roof now? your opinion counts
« on: January 06, 2007 - 09:56:53 PM »
just a quickie:

I want to know if I should wel my roof on now, as opposed to the springtime. I have a little bit if patch work to do. It seems as though there are some pitted areas under the skin- it's been wheeled out now. I have cut out the bad stuff, but there is still some slightly pitted stuff there.

Should I weld it in?
Should I wait and get the weldable primer? Should I not worry about it? It's been there for 30+ years, and this car will likely never be left outside again...

maybe I'm just nervous.

I don't know anything about welding, but I would get the primer.  Whenever I have a question about going "the extra mile", I know I should.  It'll eat at you later if you don't.

Coat the entire under side with POR-15 or Rust Bullit and weld away.

Dave,
"Coat the entire under side with POR-15 or Rust Bullit and weld away."
Is POR 15 or Rust Bullit weldable? Can I get the Rust Bullit through Eastwood?
The temp is falling here, getting into the low 40s. I may have to wait until spring before I can prime it. How can I protect it until then? Coat it in oil/grease?

I know its eating at me already.

Thanks again,

Dan

Just buy it direct from them. I just bought some too. Easy to work with. Get the silver label stuff.

Neither product I mentioned is a weld-thru type primer. I would still coat the whole underside of it and then grind the areas that you will weld to.
These products will stop the rust that is still on the undersides of most roof panels , you will need to get the panel warm for the products to dry though.
Whether you weld it now or in the spring the coatings are a good idea for this panel.
I don't use POR on any panel that will have finish work done to it but like it a lot for killing rust on under sides of unexposed panels.
Oil or grease will just cause a mess to be cleaned later and contaminate/cause problems later in the body work process.

Dave,

I found a weldable primer through Eastwood. I can then hit the other areas with Rust Bullet- which I need. I just need a temperature controlled environment. I will have to ask around.

Many thanks,
