Carburettor recommendations for 383 please.
« on: January 07, 2007 - 05:12:48 AM »
Have a 383 (30 thou overbore) with 3462346 heads (rebuilt only - no porting, don't know if valve ports were increased.  Supposedly CC'd at 10.3:1 compression but accuracy of info is in doubt) which will be running a mild cam (stage 2?), Edelbrock Torker 383 single plane manifold and TTI 1.75" headers.

I would appreciate some recommendations of good/suitable carbs for this set-up.  Have a Carter TQ with 6-2146 on upper surface and 2557 on the lower but don't know what engine this is off (other than it came with the 383 which had an Offenhauser dual plane manifold.  Rebuild the TQ or go Holley or similar?  The Mopar performance book indicates that the TQ is good for improving performance on 383s and recommends it for 'street machines'.  My engine builder is trying to steer me towards a Holley Steet Avenger? but I think this is primarily due to using them regularly and unfamiliarity with the thermo quad.

Sorry about the vague specs but still learning in the engine department.  Cheers.

The TQ is a good carb. Very good in fact with great low rpm throttle response.

But Holleys are easier to find tuning parts for and many more people are familiar with tuning them. I use Holleys all the time now just because I know how to get them right off by heart.

You also need to know how much airflow your engine needs before picking one.

CFM required = CID x Maximum RPM / 3456

This assumes 100% volumetric efficiency at high rpms and also tells you what the minimum size carb should be on your engine.

So for example 383 x 6000 / 3456 = 665cfm

Going smaller than this figure will give you better throttle response and drivability at low rpms. Going bigger will help the top end power and allow more rpms if needed.

The # on the T-Q is on the base plate , back drivers side. Depending on which one the numbers should be 47?? or 61??, 63?? , 90??, 98??.., look to see which one you have.  T-Q's are a great carb  if you can get a good one. In your case I look for a AVS  or HOLLEY. I be interested in it if your not going to use it. I also have a AVS #4682S from a '69 383 A/T Dodge SuperBee. I think it is a 600 or a 625 cfm carb, not 100% sure on the cfm..

Im a Holley/Demon person myself, so with that said....my old 383 was about the exact same build and it ran great with the Holley 750 DP I had on it, so I would recommend that carb.

A 750 is as high as you should go on a 383 though. And be carefull with Demon carbs. They have a lot of machining problems and need stripping down and checked before fitting. Also bare in mind that a 750 Demon actually flows more like an 850 and will run VERY rich at idle unless you dial in massive initial advance and limit the advance in the distributor.

The TQ will work great if it is around the 650-750 size. But if your cam has much more duration that a stock cam you will probably need to change the springs on the metering rods to match the lower manifold vacuum.

I would  also use the Holley 750 , I use a lot of the  82751 carbs with no choke , they are a 4 corner idle , double pumper , new deisgn , very responsive
