Just made that run for ya 440SixPack, and am a little embarassed I didn't think to do it right.  What I should've done was drop in into 2nd and rev it to 6500 (life above 6000 in a hemi is a real treat!), but instead I just stabbed it in Drive at 60, where it downshifted then kicked back up at 5500 on its own.  Anyway, we'd only be talkin' 1 or 2 tenths of a second difference and I think this number is good yardstick for you :  60 - 100 in 3.9 seconds, stock except for headers, automatic, 255/60 15's and a 3.91 rear ratio.  Speedo error taken into account ~

At that time I had a RV cam in it and that was it. 323 gears, 727 auto, and the speedo couldnt have been to far off because when i was cruising at 80 my dad was next to me doing a speedo check to make sure that we were at least close. the motor was screaming at about 6500 RPM

What about the 15.1  1/4 mile time, that seems really slow. I thought the car had to make the 13 or 14's to be part of the Scat Pack? or was that one of the engine sizes could make it and then all of the models were part of it?

Impressive number :2thumbs: :jumping: :clapping: Although it could be faster If you made that run like you wanted to. What do you think is 440-6 faster from 60 - 100 than a hemi? By the way have your hemi cuda ever been on the dragstrip?  :)

I would say that 383 can go 14 seconds no problem...but 13...you need more horsepower for that :)

No, I don't think a 440 6-pack is faster from 60 - 100 ... just the opposite in fact.  One of the reasons a 440 6-pack could run with a hemi (in the 1/4 mile) was because of its lower end torque.  The hemi's got more hp (mine dyno'ed at 528 @ 6300 rpm ... interestingly, it also dyno'ed at 425 @ 4850 - just like the factory specs) and hp is what gets you from 60 - 100.  Horsepower is for when you're already rolling while torque is for getting a stationary object moving ... think about the torque of a semi pulling 80,000 lbs to 90 mph while a high hp Bonneville Salt Flats car has to be towed to 100 ish because it hasn't got the torque to move from zero.  Both our engines were rated at 490 ft lbs of torque, although the 440 6-pack was at almost 1000 rpm less. Also, as the hemi is in a world of its own, and lovin' it, above 6000, the 440 is done by then.  Now, the other way to phrase your question would be "Do I think the 440 6-pack could do it quicker than 3.9"?  Yes, if it were at sea-level, with 1 person instead of 2, and the right combo of tire / rear end.  I've mentioned sea-level before ... you effectively lose half a compression point per 1000 ft of elevation, so my hemi is effectively a 9.0:1 compression engine (which is why I can run 92 octane here, but need racing fuel on the coast to keep from pinging) while a 440 at sea-level would be at 10.5:1.  Lastly, no, I haven't been to the drag strip ... yet.  I'm looking into a set of drag radial T/A's for this coming spring ~

1970hemicuda great and interesting post :worshippy I know the difference between torque and horsepower and I also know that 440-6 does the same torque as hemi but at lower rpms so it has better launch. I was just wondering because 60 - 100 mph isn't such a high speed...I thought that hemi would pull harder after 90 or 100 mph than 440-6 pack. At the end of 1/4 mile both engines do about 100 mph, hemi is always faster but not much.... So from a roll at 60 mph would 440-6 pack still jump ahead of the hemi?  :clueless:

Btw...I know that muscle car engines are underrated but 528 @ 6300 rpm  :eek2: :ylsuper:

Not sure ... it would be fun to go side by side at 60 mph with each car!  I was also (very pleasantly) surprised at the hp I dyno'ed at, yet, it was very cool to see it at the advertised hp at the advertised rpm.  The 440 was really underrated because Chysler couldn't advertise it with more hp than the hemi, but the hemi was at the maximum advertised hp because of the mandate that an engine couldn't produce more hp than cubic inches ... hence 425 hp at 4800 rpm out of a 426 cubic inch engine.  I'll be in touch (if not sooner) in the Spring after I make my drag strip run.  I really expect to be in the 115 mph range if the drag radial T/A's do what they're supposed to ~
