Still a Mopar person, but........
« on: January 12, 2007 - 12:54:52 PM »
I might as well stand in front of the :villagers:

I have been looking for a good daily driver that has good gas mileage to replace my nissan p/u (300,000 miles), and I was offered a FREE Honda CRX (180,000) that had a little suspension damage about a month ago.

Well, I hate the idea of owning a Honda since I am a not a ricer person, but since gas prices do not seem to be dropping back down much, my fuel cost was draining my wallet faster than I liked.

With about $700 in repairs and upgrades, the car runs great and averages well over 30mpg even with my heavy foot.

I can see why the youth thinks their ricers are fast because the gearing in the cars are very low, they weigh nothing (CRX=2000lbs), and they corner like they are on rails (stock).   :eek7:  It is not a V8 by any means, and my Challenger was still faster than it with the original 318.

Don't worry, I will always be a Mopar person, but I have to admit the CRX is fun to drive.   :eek7:  I call it my "Street-legal Go-cart".  NO, it does not have a loud exhaust.

Well, I figured I better say something incase someone catches me driving it.   :walkaway:

It's all good. I drive 100 miles everyday to work so I drive a Honda as well. I just think of it as more money I save on gas the more I have for my Cuda.

I wish I could afford a Cummins, but I am limited on my cash flow.  Also the old p/u got 20-25mpg, but i needed something much better.

Part of the $700 was a Christmas gift.

Wow, I knew they were good engines, but I never would have guessed that.

What upgrades did your friend have on his Cummins?

Even though I don't drive very far, I did something similar.
I figured that it was getting very expensive to keep refueling my 11-mpg Cadillacs, so I went shopping for something more fuel efficient so I could still keep my Caddys and drive them about once a week.
I didn't want something small- I wanted a large car that got good fuel mileage and kind of recent. I decided on a 1990s car, either Cadillac or Lincoln. I heard many more good things about '90s Lincoln's compared to Cadillac's so, I decided on the Town Car. They have a better-than-average repair record.
I narrowed it down to '94 or '95, then decided on '95 because I like the controls on the steering wheel (cruise control, radio volume and tuning and a/c fan speed) and because the '95s had a 2.84:1 1st gear ratio compared to the 2.40:1 on the '94s.

After a 3-month search, I found a very good '95 TC Signature, 109,000 miles, original owner with all the service records, grey, leather interior, etc.
I am very pleased with the mileage I am getting from this 4,200 lb, V-8, large car. The range has been 17.8-24.3 mpg, with the current average at 20.6 mpg. Some TC owners have gotten as much as 28 mpg on all-highway trips.
Acceleration is pretty good, too. Car & Driver tested a '95 and got a 9.0 sec 0-60 mph time and a 16.9@83 mph 1/4 mile. A lot of luxury and 20+ mpg!
As planned, my two Cads ('69 Fleetwood Brougham and '76 Fleetwood limo) are driven once every 7-10 days. A tank of gas lasted in my '69 from Nov. 3 to Jan. 10.

What upgrades did your friend have on his Cummins?

Not much , K&N air cleaner & the  inline pump tuned up
mine has the rotary pump turned up with a K&N aircleaner  everything else is still stock  , it made 310 hp & 930 Ft Lbs at the tires on a Mustang dyno
there is a lot more power available with 5" exhaust , better turbo & intake , header on the exhaust , bigger injectors  etc , but that all costs $$ , turning the pump up & adding the K&N cost me $70 total

I do not know much about the Cummins, but how do you go from stock to 930 Ft Lbs with just a filter and turning up the pump?  Does turning up the pump also increase the turbo psi?
