1972 'Cuda 340 4 Speed
« on: January 14, 2007 - 06:28:05 AM »
Greetings All,

I have been looking for 70-71 Challenger or 70-74 'Cuda for months.  I prefer a 4 speed.

I have found a 72 'Cuda 340 4 Speed that is somewhat numbers matching.  In other words the engine number is off by 3 digits and the rest of the car matches.  Is is possible that the engine being off by a few digits is a factory mistake?

The dealer is sending me more pictures on Monday.

Here is what I have been told so far:

  • 55,000 Original Miles
  • Non-AC
  • Engine is stock with the following exceptions, has headers, not original but correct carb (Not sure what that means)
  • Interior is suppose to be all original and in good shape except carpet has split at heal pad.
  • Factory Radio
  • Rallye Dash (All gauges work)
  • Rallye Wheels

Now the known Bad:
  • Has a Dash Cap(To cover a cracked dash I suppose)
  • Missing fender tag (Dealer has not looked for the broadcast sheet)
  • Dome light does not work
  • Blower motor makes noise

Dealer is asking $32,900.00 for this car.  Based on the above is it worth that or if not what is it really worth?

Any help appreciated...

Mike, this is Paul with the red/white 74.   Are they saying 1 digit is off by 3, or 3 of the numbers don't match?   I had a 71 Cuda that the first number of the tranny was 2 and should have been three, and the 3rd and 4th cowl numbers were inverted on the same car.   I have had a couple other weird stamp issues, so yes, they did screw up back then.   Have them send you a good picture of those stampings when they send them on Monday.   Will you post the pictures here?

Hi Paul,

The engine serial number is off by a few digits.  I'll get the specifics and reply back to this thread.  So is the car worth less if there is no fender tag and possibly no build sheet, or is the car worth the same if it does not have them?

Thanks

Mike

No way a 72-74 is worth that much.   :grinno:

$25-26k tops, JMO.   :2cents:

Anyone else?

:iagree:  Unless it is a pristine example of a '72 Cuda with all the documentation, then maybe, but even then $32,900 is a bit much.

Without the Fender tag and the broadcast sheet this car has lost it's "pedigree".  So IMO worth less.  The more documantation, history, paperwork, the better.

Has it undergone a resto of any sorts.  Paint does look real nice.  Post some more pics.  Post the VIN # too to make sure it's a real Cuda and not a base model dressed up like a Cuda.

The carb should be a Carter Thermoquad if I'm not mistaken.

Not sure what to make of the engine stamping issue.

Little piddly thing noticed from pic: Those center caps and hockey stick stripe were not available for on the Cuda for '72, but the do look nice!   Also only 14" rims were available that year if I'm not mistaken, not sure what size those are.
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Original sheet metal or rusty and restored?I agree 32,9 is high even for a nice numbers matching correct `72 and that one may be niether.
